    Question about trim removal

Hey guys, so a while back someone keyed my car on both sides, caught him on camera, but because of the location it was too hard to make out the face, but I am gonna have the car repainted, since the scratches can't be buffed out. Here is my dilemma, since I am being frugal, I wanna remove most of the trims, so that the bodyshop can give me a better price, but I've never removed the trims pictured below...are they just clip ins, glued in? What's the deal? I've looked at the Bentley manual, but they're not too specific. Any tips? Recommendations?

Edit:Whatta!!! I added arrows on photobucket, but they're not showing, anyway it's the rear winshield, also the rear window bottom trim, and the one that's diagonal.

Adhesive. Use Goo-gone and heat gun.

Rear window trim is a snap in deal, might as well get new since you will likely break it (14+ year old plastic) when removing. Not having done the other I can't say for certain, though I know Bobby has replaced all this stuff on his car and can tell you what’s what on that.

Really sorry to hear about the keying. What a ****head! Too bad you didn't catch the prick!

Thanks guys! I guess I'll have to find out about the rear windshield....someone once told me that the whole glass needs to be removed, I hope that's not the case. It does give me a chance to remove and replace all the trims, but these are not the circumstances I wanted to change them under.

Nah, that is the front glass, that trim does not come out without removing the windshield. The back snaps in.

Just did the back glass trim on mine, its a cinch. Just get a new one unless you are certain when it was changed last.

The rear windshield trim is pretty straightforward to remove as described.

The rear quarter window trim will require new parts. The coupe lower trim strip on the bottom of the quarter windows is glued/taped on from the factory and is about impossible to remove intact. You will almost certainly need to replace each and they're $12 from tBMWPS last time I checked. 51368119963 and 51368119964 for the left and right sides.

The Rear quarter window seal fits in a groove and can be pulled out easily, but the upper portion fits under the roof molding and you may damage the roof molding that runs from the front to back removing the quarter window seals. The quarter window seals are also probably old and rotted and around $16 each side from tBMWPS.

I have no experience with pulling the roof molding intact, and by that I mean I recall it being glued on as well but I haven't successfully removed them gently for reuse; that should be another thing to look into replacing if you are doing a proper respray, along with all the front door moldings and the windshield/windshield molding. If you're dropping the $$$$ on a proper respray, replacing all the exterior trim and rubber seals should be a priority as well.

For a paint job you will also need to remove the drip rail that goes from the bottom of th A pillar all the way over the window and to the bottom of th C pillar. To do this PAY CLOSE ATTENTION. You will need to remove the rear window (not that hard to do). Then you will be able to start at the front by your side mirror and Gently pull the trim out and work your way towards the rear. If you do not remove the Rear window, you WILL bind the trim and screw it up! Ask me how I know...... Once the drip rail has been carefully removed, then you can actually gently pry up on the rubber piece that goes along the bottom of the rear window. A little solvent will take the residue from the adhesive off. The same goes for the rubber piece at the top of the door too! Now is the chance to do it right, so do not cheap out and try to mask around any of this stuff

Jrrrrrrr, thanks for those numbers. Been wanting to do some of these bits but have not gotten around to it. You have motivated me. Also really need to repaint the drip rail trim as mine looks like ass.

Use the door panel trim as the lower border of the paint job. Remove those plastic mouldings and they will paint under it, but not below it.

The lower trim below each window has an aluminum bar in it. You will bend it and never get it straight again. Replace those.

Dont bother painting the drip rails they are plastic covered aluminum and are a pain in the ass. When it's all said and done its far easier to just buy 2 brand new ones and be done. Plus they are pretty cheap (like under $40 each)

Ah, well that is cheaper than I figured. All the trim is shot on the coupe, and while I am not that worried about looks on that car (DD/beater after all) that is not that much money to make it appear better. Sounds like I have another project now....

I was pricing out and purchasing parts from different vendors, as not all of them have everything. They're turning out to be a nice little chunk of change, those drip rails are quoted at about $33 on realoem, but in actuality they're like $100 bucks each...at least from two retailers that I've seen. Where did you guys get them for $40?
