    Vanos Noise?

So I just put my car back together after indexing the cams and resetting the vanos due to a CEL (P1519 I believe, vanos mechanically stuck was the description). I used all proper tools and everything went smoothly. Followed procedure step by step.

When I started my car, there's a noticable grinding sound (like marbles in a can). Instead of being a steady sound, it is systematic, and increases with revs. All cam gears were triple checked for correct torque.

Could the fact that the vanos is now freed up have started the grinding? I can still feel the boost in power when the vanos engages. A stethoscope reveals that it is the vanos the noise is coming from.

Does this sound like anything you guys have heard of? I have read on multiple forums about vanos noise, but none of them describe my symptoms.

Sorry, just trying to get the full backstory here - is it a new Dr Vanos or rebuilt Besian seal unit? Or is it still the factory vanos? If its a freshly rebuilt unit it should not be making any noises obviously, something doesn't seem right. What caused it to be mechanically stuck anyway? Did you recently have it apart?

Marbles in a can and grinding are two different sounds. One is normal, the other is not.

It sounds like you did a simple remove and re-seat of the unit without a rebuild. Did you check play in the splined cup? My original one was very loose, when I rebuilt with the full beisan kit that tightened it up completely.

Its a Dr Vanos rebuilt unit that was done at 85, xxx from what im told. The car now has 170,xxx. I had it apart before to do a headgasket job, and I don't think I reinstalled the vanos unit correctly.

The plunger did seem a little loose, but not a whole lot different than the first time. I'll try to get a video today.

Does not sound good then. Did you test the engagement of the vanos with an air compressor fitting on the oil inlet and a 12v power supply?

Honestly, the stock units can start going bad at ~90k. You have about that on your Dr Vanos unit, so I'd be willing to bet that its time for a rebuild. Especially if its marbles in a can. If you didn't install it properly the first time perhaps that expedited its failure?

              That's what I have read.

I'm thinking that installing the vanos incorrectly the first time caused the vanos to be stuck. Since it was stuck, it probably tore itself apart trying to engage and disengage.

I did NOT test the vanos. I do not have the fitting for the oil supply, and honestly it just slipped my mind.

But anyway, I went out and started my car this morning, and the noise is much quieter. Car runs and drives fine. Feels like it pulls better than before, especially down low.

If the vanos is indeed broken, are there any problems that could arise from driving it? I have not stumbled across anything that says so yet.

As long as it's installed correctly this time, you should have no problem driving on it with bad seals. I'd just go the besian seal route this time around, its cheap and you already should be an expert on how to remove/install it!

                  That's the truth lol.

I just went to get a CEL checked out, and the only one was a bank 1 fuel trim. No more stuck vanos! The fuel trim hasn't shown its face again. The car sputtered badly when I first started it, like it was starving for fuel. I did clean the MAF while it was apart, so I think that had something to do with it.

The car runs great! Just noisy......
