Its a PITA to get to but its doable with the car up on stands. You need to drop your midpipe and good luck getting to it with the driveshaft still in. I dropped mine and it cleared up enough room for me to get up in there. your just working blind.

Not true. Yes, it's easier to pull both of them (maybe use it as an excuse to do the guibo), but you can do the whole job with the exhaust and DS in there.

And yes, you'll pretty much do it blind. I found it easier to work with my feet towards the front and my head towards the rear of the car with my stomach pretty much right under the transmission. Memorize the steps as you really don't need to see what you're doing.

Speaking of more durable, I put in Delrin bushings in place of #2. HUGE difference. Slightly more vibration in 2nd, but you get used to it quickly. Or at least I did. :clueless:

Thanks for the tip. I ordered a set.

I'm going to go ahead and fourth (or whatever we're on) the importance of the foam sponge behind the shift coupling. #7, the bushing for the shifter base, is also very important.

The stock shift-linkage setup is far from an epic fail when it is fresh. I also agree that delrin (or well-lubed nylon) washers are an easy and cheap upgrade for #10. I found 4x appropriately-sized delrin washers at my hardware store for almost nothing and installed them for my shift-linkage refresh.

The z3 lever and the upgraded aluminum selector rod pivot joint both do away with the washers. Just FYI.

I am changing this shift coupler now also, the foam was shot, note that on the new style you will have to file down the protruding plastic to get a DSSR to fit.

Sweet, thanks B! Is that the shift lever from the Z3M? 25117580281, check.

I'm getting ready for a clutch job and am slowly putting parts together so any info is greatly appreciated. A list of PNs for the shifter upgrade would be über cool.

Why would BMW make that part out of foam, is it to absorb vibrations?

No, it's to allow the joint to move with resistance and also keep the shifter rigid. Think of it as a basic spring if you will. I'm sure we can all sit around and debate better solutions than foam.

Agreed that the foam disc is the main source of slop. It's frustrating. And 3-5 years is generous. Mine was noticeably less tight after about a year. Not sure if there's a more durable material that would work in that application.

Which piece if the foam disc?

Foam disc is #14 in the diagram above.

And I think I got the delrin bushings from UUC, but I can't say for sure. Just Google it. :thumbsup2:

unfortunately -281 is superseding all the older -688. You can order -688 and still get -281. You have to be very careful and specifically ask for 688.

Jesus Christ this is getting complicated.

Ok, so here's what I think needs to be replaced:

                            14

2 - Is this thie upgraded delrin piece? http://store.uucmotorwerks.com/delrin-carrier-bushings---oval-p9.aspx ???

                            4

                            7

Does the Bear motorsport kit replace all of the above? If not, which doesn't it replace?

yes, my kit replaces the entire shifter assembly, if u get the OE refresh kit with it.

Contact me, and I can get u a full kit shipped out as soon as payment is made.

Installed the Bear Motorsports kit yesterday. HUGE improvement. There is now minimal slop in the shifter and I am a happy clam.

However the clutch is on it's way out. Oh well...
