Exactly. So only real nice OEM headunits are the CD43 and BE2450/BE2455

iPhone integration with OEM head unit? Dice? Grom?

I have the Dice thing with a C43 (cassette) HU. It's buggy, but no to the point where it doesn't work. Sometimes you have to select a song twice before it'll paly, etc. But I just deal with it. I only drive the car in the summer. To me, all of the aftermarket heads with modern functionality look cheap and tacky. You could get a Blaupunkt unit, I guess, which looks OK-ish, and has Bluetooth, etc., but if you want it to sound decent, you need to replace the crappy HK amp and speakers with something else, add external crossovers, etc.

The soundplicity option seems pretty good. Sucks you have to be in cd mode to get calls too but it seems like an overall good option
Seems like a good option, yea. But I can't find good reviews or real details from anyone who is using it, and their site says there's a 6-8 week delay in shipping

The Intravee II is a very good option. Like Dice/Dension, but much better.
Just a shame the original developer died and the product is NLA. Second hand ones go for quite silly money.
You need the Alpine KCA 420i interface as well for ipod connectivity.
You can still buy it new from toysinyour car, who is the same company that always sold it. There's also still software updates through RichardP, if you have requests or find a bug.

However... does this work in the e36? If so, with which head units?
The intravee is AWESOME, imo. Easily in the top 5 mods I've done to either of my street cars.

We are working on getting more reviews around the net, but the response we have had has been positive, and it is covered under our Satisfaction Guarantee so it is non-comittal to give it a go. We also should have these in much sooner than than that timeframe, within plenty of time for the Holidays, and it is a large batch that is arriving

Sorry to say that I wasn't able to wait 6-8 weeks for it. Even so - though I would have liked to keep the stock head unit look, a new pioneer head unit with Aux, usb, and customizable colors to match the BMW Amber was just $130.

Interesting. I've been on that site in the past and I'd swear it was NLA.
It should work with (and only with) the CD43 headunit.
I missed out on the IntraveeII+Alpine interface for sale for €100.

hmmmm……I like this thread! I have an older kenwood, but it's blue, and misplaced in the interior. Not planning to replace immediatly as it works fine for now, but it would be nice to have it match as well as have bluetooth options.
The pioneer I ended up getting has the ability to change colors, which gets close enough to the BMW Amber. The screen is glossy, which is different, but not different enough that it looks ridiculous.

I can't take how aftermarket head units look.
If I were going aftermarket in an e36, I'd go hole hog with a double din (one that's CarPlay compatible) and relocated the climate control to the lower section.
I'm amazed that, after all these years, nobody makes a head unit that just blends into the interior. 95% (made up) of factory buttons are matte black-- why are no head units that. Wtf is with the silver knobs and glossy screen?!!
Grr

That's my long term plan. At some point I will get my hands on a 3D printer and see if a proper bracket can be made, or a new face for the climate controls.

And the weird thing is, they used to make units that would have blended in just fine. In the early 90s, just about anything Pioneer or Blaupunkt made would have looked pretty decent in an E36. Then suddenly obnoxious circus displays become the industry standard and now here we are. :clueless:
