Regular K+Dcan cable versus more expensive Ediabas loaded cable

Can anyone knowledgable tell me specifically what can be done with a regular k+dcan cable with green pcb? It seems like you need one of these cables loaded with ediabas firmware to safely flash the ECU with an engine tune, but does that also apply to using winkfp to update DCT with GTS tune? Can you use a basic cable to code with NCS (euroMDM, TPMS delete etc)?

I did read one post saying you don't need the better/safer cable for diagnostics (INPA). So I guess that's just reading? But editing the bin and flashing back could be a problem for a basic cable?

Just trying to figure out what I can accomplish with my basic cable and what I'd need a $50+ cable with ediabas firmware for.

    Thanks!

I haven't found anything different yet, it still seems like the only safe thing you can do with good K+Dcan that hasn't had its firmware updated is to read or make communication. At least I can test that the install of INPA and other tools went well. And I should be able to see what software version I'm on for DME (latest is 241E) or DSC for example. Should be able to read codes, maybe even clear them?

I plan to buy an updated cable anyway as I will want to modify things at some point and load the updated DCT software at a minimum, probably euroMDM as well and get MSS60flasher and ECUwerx tool.

I also found the latest v71 sp daten files incase anyone needs them, I can provide torrent magnet link.

You can use this thread to use an arduino to update any cable with Ediabas: https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=2037462

There already are DIY instructions on this own forum for loading a dcan cable with ediabaslib.

But that has nothing to do with this thread.

        I found this on m3post:

Click image for larger version Name:	coding.jpg Views:	0 Size:	126.1 KB ID:	297036

If this is true, then it seems like it's the flashing to engine ECU that you want to avoid with a regular cable. Connecting, reading, even coding, and access other modules ok? Can anyone confirm this info?

Can confirm that GS40 flashes without issues with a regular cable. MSS60 I use an ediabaslib cable (per Terra's instructions).

That's what I've come to believe as well. Regular cable (without 7/8 bridged or with the switch, then switched to the right) is fine for everything but MSS60 flashing.

Thanks Kevin. Can you check the Let's see your e9x m3 thread, wondering about DCT behavior with the newer u.s. file (869) you, and now I, had flashed.
