You have never driven one, have you? Because anybody who have, can't possibly call E36M a pile of trash.
Back in the day, it was the best handling car by a long shot over some really big names. I still think they are second best M3, yes, even with the crappy S52.

I'm not sure why you're so hung up on the vert thing, but there's been several non vert 325i's that have sold for nearly double that on BaT...

Not really hung up just being contrarian. Double is a lot but there are some surprising results all around these days. What it looks like to me, and I’ve watched this for other cars, is the older they get the pricier they trade for, beginning at around the 20 year mark, then every 5 years after that. So with E30s now being 35 years old, that would explain some of this to me. Otherwise they’re just old and slow with parts hard to come by.

The world still loves convertibles. That didn't stop with the E46M. The convertible lovers are still out there writing big checks and having big fun with the cars, even if they're not on forums. I drove both an e30 325i and an m3 a few years ago when I was a relatively new e46 m3 owner. They both just felt old and slow.

Yeah, there are always some sleepers to be had... you just gotta know which ones they are before the rest of the world catches on. The E9X sedan is definitely within scope. A Vortec supercharger cures any power ills the car has, in spades.
