Went down this route, original HK non-nav. Went Bavsound for a decent sound upgrade, did the RF 6x9's on the shelf which didn't really make that much of a difference. Then did a new head unit along with a decent DSP amp and hacked into the original wiring for the speakers. The DSP amp upgrade was a MASSIVE upgrade and would really start there along with speakers if you want actual decent audio in your car.

Hey guys - finally going this route with Bavsound + Rockford Fosgate 6x9’s. Only question I have for you all - my car is HK sound system, without factory Nav, what is the stock amp in my car and can it be upgraded? I emailed Baris at Carphonics and he replied saying he only upgrades the BM53 for the factory nav unit and not anything with a factory radio, which left me puzzled. I guess the only amp upgrade I can do is aftermarket at this point?

I currently have an Avin Avant 4 which I’ve been super happy about, massive sound quality difference over the stock radio. Only question for me now is how it’ll sound with these new speakers, but I’ll wait and see. Just trying to stay a step ahead knowing if nothing changes amp wise then you’ll still get the same quality even out of new speakers.

What good does better quality 6x9s with more xmax do if the stock amp (the size of a deck of cards lol) can't even push stock speakers adequately?

Good sound comes from good fidelity, all freq being recreated appropriately. Well, any decent set of speakers can create ~40hz-20khz. But will they? Only with adequate power.

So the part to upgrade in every system is the amplifier.

I upgraded to the Bavsound speakers a few years ago, and it was a huge step up from the HK system! I thought the sound quality of the car was fantastic, until a year ago when I purchased a Tesla Model Y Performance. The sound system in the Model Y is next level. Since then, I've been thinking about different ways to improve the sounds quality of the M3 even more. I did some research and found that some owners have replaced their HK 6x9 subs with the CDT Audio HD-690CFS, so I purchased a pair. I may also swap out the OEM headunit for either an Xtrons or Rendition screen, plus a new amp and DSP. Chat is suggesting this amp/dsp combo Audison AP F8.9 bit. Any suggestions on audio components would be greatly appreciated.

They won't be here anytime soon though, but I'll report back on if they work correctly or not.

I have bought the Bavsound set for the HK system for the e46 coupe, as I wanted something that installs like OEM without any modification.
I'm no audiophile, I just like listening to music in the car and would like something a bit better than the 22 year old speakers that are currently installed.

I also wanted to update the shelf deck mounted subwoofer, but I can't find any 6" x 9" bass speaker that has a 2 ohms impedance and that is available where I am located, in France.

The only real option that I have found so far is the Powerbass OE-690D

But, shipping to France is crazy expensive.

That looks like a good candidate, that can handle more power than the OE speakers, and that has the correct impedance to use as much as possible the small HK amplifier

Is there any other option ? I'm not really convinced by the Rockford Fosgate 4 Ohms option referenced in this thread.

for the woofers just make sure they are not too thick or they wont fit in the original HK woofer basket if you have the factory rear sunshade option.

Did you upgrade the sub? N7 in a vert more or less requires an upgraded sub. The distortion you're hearing is probably the sub and not the speakers. That ski pass sub is trash. I have the same setup, but the sub is what makes it go. No sub upgrade, no go.

Honestly not sure how I missed this after almost a year…No sub upgrade, and I know the vert sub sucks. I’m not interested in crazy bass, but clear sound would be nice. I also screwed up and have an N6, not an N7. Thinking about upgrading to the D9. But the distortion is most definitely from the door speakers. Cant get passed like 2/3-3/4 volume, bass turned down a few clicks. Sounds awful. Driving on the higway, may as well turn it off. The stock HK speakers could get louder with less distortion

Was going to get carphonics amp upgrade to see if that helps

I just did this so it's pretty fresh in my mind. Quantities for door clips should be for both doors, I would order more though just for good measure, plus the door clips are not bad to have. I may be forgetting something but this should probably cover your needs. I had to replace a lot more since I was putting everything back in the car...

That part!!

The factory head unit is a toy by today's standards. The factory speakers are toys. And the factory amps are toys. Why anyone would work to save any of it is beyond me.

But I'm the guy here (among many guys everywhere) who believes the Cardas Sweep actually does something and that sound deadening and better wires are worth the money. How could I possibly believe that?

I've finally completed my black interior swap and just waiting on my Sporster CS's to arrive. Thought I'd chime in since I've completed the following,

- Dynavin 9
- BavSound Stage-1 speakers
- Rockford Fosgate 6x9's in the OEM HK box
- Choice location of sound deadening in the doors and rear deck, 3"x3" squares w/ 1" gaps along with Melamime foam sitting on top of them.

My initial impression coming from a stock HK/Nav car is that I'm fairly impressed, actually quite blown away. I think the car feels a lot more modern with the very quick Dynavin (sans the "in your face" logo) head and the output is much better than the OEM Nav could ever be, even with my upgraded BM53 from Baris. The BavSound speakers sound great all around, mids will do, the highs are great and the lows/bass is there now with a nice punch. I didn't go super high on the volume but it seems they can take quite a bit of juice, they're sturdy and good build quality. The RF 6x9's contrary to some of the reports I've read on here are amazing. Nice bass from them, definitely rattling the OEM plastic box and adding the much needed lows.

I'll probably do what MAW suggests in terms of amps, I went ahead and pre-ran all the RCA cables to the rear so in the future if I decide to go aftermarket amp it's ready. So far though, I'm impressed. Will probably give it a go and play around with the equalizer in the mean time. I cannot comment on a factory OEM unit with the RF 6x9's, but with the Dynavin they sound much better than the factory HK subs, if you can even call them subs.

Having had factory H/K, (non nav), I upgraded the "subs" to RF 6x9's, but didn't really find the sound after to be that much better. I think the factory sub amp is basically a toy, not enough juice to power the speakers properly (but I do rate the Rockfords as a decent alternative for the price). You probably had a much better setup than me with the Baris upgrade and the head unit so it's not really a comparison per se.
