how long does it take to change a Vanos system? My car has been in the shop since May 4th. Diagnosing it took awhile which just ended up with me ordering a new Beisan Vanos system which arrived last Thursday. The shop confirmed that it arrived and that they will get their tech to work on it but To date, I haven’t gotten and updates. Would it take a week to install?
From the sounds of it, they might need to take off the oil pan and clean out any parts that fell out of the other VANOS. That means front subframe out and oil pan off, which typically takes about a day. Add another day for new VANOS install. They most likely have other work as well and could also be waiting on misc. parts.

Got it. Do you have their info?

Lama from beisan sent me some recs too. Odd that the pico rivera guy isn’t on the list below:

Here are some shops. Just let them know you spoke to Beisan systems and I recommended them. And they will take care of you. Best of luck. And let me know if you need anything else.

For major or technical work, it might be worth driving to Kaiv in SD.

Yea not sure what to really think. I don't have enough technical knowledge to refute what they are saying. Once again, this is a very well known and popular shop in SoCal so I doubt they would lie. I've been going to them ever since I had my f80 years ago.

I guess I can find another shop after the fact, but I already bought the needed parts and they just need to install it and be done.

Anyone know of a shop more dedicated to e46 M3s in SoCal, particulary in LA? My friend mentioned JMP but any more recs are welcome.

What is odd is the snap ring is still in place.

All the needle bearings are out in the oil pan so we are going to need to flush the engine oil

The Beisan vanos would work and we can flush out the oil pan.

Call up beisan and see if they can sell you a rebuilt VANOS with tbd OEM pump disc hole size.
Thanks for this. I ended up just buying their exhaust hub as well as the unit itself. My VANoS system should be bulletproof now right? Haha I even changed out the solenoid stuff earlier too!

I shall have a slightly used VAC exhaust hub for sale soon. Didn’t want to mix parts.

    thanks for the help!

No idea but I just ended up buying the Beisan Vanos unit and their exhaust hub and having it shipped to my shop. Hopefully after that my Vanos issues will be fixed.

The snap ring isn't in place in the photos you posted earlier.

Edit: unless it’s part of the needle bearing casing?

Yeah agreed. If that retaining clip wasn't seated properly, or the oil pump pistons weren't seated properly then that could be the cause of this too. The “bearing” damage could be subsequent to that. All depends on exactly what OPs mechanic did/didn't disassemble.
