Oil evacuated through oil filler cap

    As per title,

Driving along, I get the yellow oil caution light, didn't think much of it but took it slow and easy straight home, only to find it completely drenched in engine oil under the hood. Looks like it came from the oil filler cap.

The PCV was replaced somewhat recently, I had it apart now and it is completely clear, same with the tube from the PCV to the intake.
I removed all the plugs and compression was 155 on no1 and 160 on the last 5. A cheap gauge so perhaps not the most accurate, but even numbers across the cylinders.

If I remove the PCV tube from the PCV, I get a slight vacuum at idle, is this normal? I've tried googling this oil evacuation thing, but could only find 1 post stating the S54 is sensitive to overfilling, I may have been ever so slightly above max, but not by much at all.

I've had an old Mercedes 190e that decided to do the same through the dipstick tube, it only did this once and I never had that car do that again since.

Anyone know what this brass coloured thing is on the valve cover? Connects to the PCV, a one way valve of sorts?

I'd like to get some input as I don't want this to happen again.

    Many thanks
