IHKR - Has anyone tried to do the downgrade climate controller knobs?

You can't switch to the manual control without changing out the heater core box. They are specific. Manual control has its own separate box.

With the manual climate controller installed. This is what shows up on the scan. I wonder if this affects anything else in the car?

It was pretty clear that the 997 and the M3 were going to end up in worse shape than when he bought them. The encouragement he received to continue hacking up shit was baffling.

Another option is a full custom PCB to take the place of dials unit board that can emulate the IHKA outputs. Man-at-the-start instead of man-in-the-middle sorta thing.

A cool little project would be to use a microcontroller to interface the manual controls with the digital controller. that would mean no need to change the mechanism, but still get the manual control panel.

I was thinking something similar. There's definitely enough space back there to stuff the (facelift) digital control board + some small uC board. Intercept signal from dials, feed to uC, translate and feed expected button press to digital unit, done.

Yeah, that's how I felt. Kind of cool if it were a simple swap, but not really worth any headache to make it work.

My neighbor had a manual climate control laying around so I swapped it out. The vent selector knob did not work correctly and a quick search showed others having a similar issue, so I swapped it back. Did I miss something?

Regardless, Obioban is right - digital hvac controls are perfect. Manual controls are neat but worse, if you're into that kind of thing.
