Which csl airbox to buy?

So first they all sound the same, and now they don't. Amazing how you don't permit the subjectivity of hearing a difference, and tout your own subjectivity of hearing no difference as sacrosanct. Nothing to agree with other than your hypocrisy and inability to let others have/express their own opinion.

I've heard a VAC, OE, Karbonius V# and Evolve, and there was not a significant enough difference in sound to make me buy one over the other (with the exception of build quality). For me, it's a S54 with a carbon airbox and that's what is important for sound. You don't agree and that's ok bud.Originally posted by natty99 View Post
It's a shame that M3Forums shut down...some of the members here just don't understand the pedigree of some members. NZ_M3 has been around for a long time and knows quite a bit about the csl airbox and all its variants. He's posted extensively on it on the old forum. I'm not sure what you're on about to categorically say that they all sound the same when carbon thickness clearly has an affect on the sound. OE and Karbonius definitely have a different tone. Whether its small or large, the difference is perceptible. You arguing otherwise does not negate my experience or that of NZ_M3 and other well established members on the subject. But you do you boo

^LOL @ last sentence.
Def true, NZ_M3 put a lot of effort comparing in detail on an old m3F thread. One of the few guys I remember with the actual OEM airbox.

Perform the same test with a group of potential airbox buyers and I don't think you'll get the same result. Carbon airbox versus CAI, sure.

You can't - - even if you found a place that will turn a blind eye to the visual, the CSL MAP DME cannot communicate w/ state emissions computers. Have to keep the stock bits and just swap out every two years.Originally posted by csynic View Posthow does having an intake impact CA smog? how do you pass it yearly?

Dumb question...if I have an MSS54HP DME then I can load a stock CSL tune, install the Karbonius airbox and then go? Or do I still need a MAP sensor?Originally posted by heinzboehmer View Post
Yes. Either custom alpha-n dyno tune or CSL DME with stock CSL tune (you can also get a dyno tune on top of that if you want max power).

Funnily enough everyone at the dyno day said they were surprised how different each airbox sounded. So I am just going to agree to disagree here. I have run these for long enough to tell the difference. Even youtube videos of them side by side revving you can tell a distinct tone difference.Originally posted by Slideways View Post

I would say close, but notably different. At dyno days we had three different airboxes (Wethje, Karbonius, Geoff Steel) and they all sound distinctively different that if you blind folded me I’d be able to tell you which is which easily.

Which one would you say sounded best? (or maybe loudest since best is very subjective)Originally posted by NZ_M3 View Post
