Great work on the DIY CSL Mark! LOL...I mean Adam Since you're making (reviving) this build thread, I'm assuming that you had a change of heart and the car is still with you? If so, I want to see it on the next drive!

Just spent the last hour or so pouring over each post and picture - I love these threads that tell a story! Unfortunately I can't tell at what point in time we're at now... are we fully caught up to present day? Haha

Edit: silly me, the magazine says 2015. Looking forward to more!

Can't imagine the memories and sentimental value you have with your car, being the original owner!

Took the car back to the shop and found out the smoke was caused by a missing gasket on the head that was dripping oil. Fixed the seal and at the same time my SMG position sensor and DSC sensors both went out. UG, when it rains it poors. Got those both fixed and then a bank 1 o2 went out. Seriously, got to love moding.

After all that the latest issues now are airbag light which I have to trace down to see which one is mad, and the rear o2 went out. Even with the 02 issues and airbag lights the car was ready to go on the Mammoth / Yosemite trip I had planned for the month.

This weekend was about 600 miles of fun roads and sightseeing. The drive sections were a lot of the road I lead people on for Lake Tahoe. All I can say is WOW this car is amazing. Now keep in mind I have yet to put a tune on the car and all I have is stock CSL everything.

Turn after turn all I could do was smile as the car just flew across the road. I have always loved this car but after this trip I could not stop thinking about when I could do a drive again. For fun one of the friend on the trip had is fully option and lighted (less supercharger) Dinan E39 M5 do a little head to head race. We did a 4th gear pull and we were dead even till he had to shift. After that I was still going and then kept going. Now if I had a tune I might have been able to pull a little.

Now the next steps are to clear all the little faults and do all the finishing touches. This trip also made me fall out of love in doing the GTR project. I already post about this in the thread.

Amazing an update after so long being MIA. I know I have been a bad M owner. Car sat for about 3 months as I am starting a new adventure in life with leading offroad groups on top of being a new dad. Needless to say, the M3 got little love so I fully expect 10 lashings for it.

So what is new? Well, all those little finishing touches that always linger and don't take a long time to do.

    1. Removed the standard roof rail. Was a pain as the shop glued the old rail in but got it out.

    2. CSL Roof rail in

    Vanity items so flame away
    3. Side emblems on

    4. Door sills

    5. After going around with the side airbag connections going on and off I finally said F-it and went fully committed to the to the removal. Cut off the OE connectors and soldiered the jumpers in. No more light thanks to Terra resting it yet again.

    New adventure
For those who are not off roading you will be like big deal but for those of you who offroad I have fully built the Raptor with a 3.5 shock setup all the way around along with other goodies.

So this is silly. All waxed, wheels cleaned and wax, brakes even waxed for a 600 mile drive to socal... Yes I am silly but oh well. It was really clean for 10 miles at least right??

Myself and another M3 had an article done for BMW Performance Magazine out of the UK. It was a joint article as we both went the way of OE CSL. The article was in the April edition of this year.

After almost 3 months the head is finally off the car and off to get work done. Details of why it took so long are boring but let say just say YAY it is moving along now.

So close to being done. Can't wait to get the car back together.

Head is finally back from Lang Racing. All first look at what a CSL head actually looks like with the shiny pointy valves installed. Can't wait to drive the car with all the changes and rock solid VANOS.

This is kind of a sad but also exhilarating post at the same time. The last of the MAJOR work on my CSL project is now down. All that is left is some little odds and ends that I will do myself in the next week or two. It took 12 years to get to this point and I never imaged when I started this journey that I would have the car where it is today.

Ok enough of the sentimental BS, show us the dam images right =P

For those looking for a shop, obviously I highly recommend them as well as use them for all my BMW’s. Remember the quality of the work is what matters not just the cost. The fact they happen to be on the reasonable side is a plus. If you need any CSL or standard work done, there is no better place to go. Thanks to the gang there for finishing the CSL car.

    ---------------------------------

The car was dropped off to my old show to finish all the head and selected items. Below is what was to be completed this time around:
    • Remove head to be sent to machine shop / reinstall head upon return
    • Head word done by Lang Racing
    • Install CSL Valves
    • Supertech Valve Spring Kit
    • Supertech Stainless Steel Intake and Exhaust Valves
    • Complete Disassembly & Cleaning
    • Comprehensive Leak, Crack & Pressure Test
    • Inspect All Components For Irregular Wear
    • Our High performance Five Angle Valve Job
    • New Valve Seals
    • Trueness Checked & Resurfaced Mating Surface
    • Unshrouding of Valves
    • Blend the throttle body ports to the intake valves and smooth out the CNC cuts on the intake side of the cylinder head.
    • Install new front spindles (CSL King PinS)
    • Note: The CSL king pins have the same part numbers as standard accept the middle three numbers are different. When these were installed we thought we had been lied to all these years they were different. Once installed you can see the difference as well.
    • Beisan Vanos install – (I did the Vanos work , they just reinstalled the Vanos into the car once the head came back)
    • CSL Cabin Air Filter assembly
    • SMG sensor replacement
    • Change over to OE BMW brake fluid for ATB Blue
    • Differential fluid change

    Head tear down and removal

Head tear down and removal part 2

Not a pretty sight to see her in so many parts and pieces =(

All boxed up and ready to go to LA.

Head back now and now the rebuilding can begin WOOTTT.

Took about two weeks for all the head work to be completed and another two to have it reinstalled along with all the other work.

    SHE LIVESSSS AGAIN

CSL Cabin filter goes in to save a WHOPING 8LB...

Last set of images of the brackets that were fabricated to make the CSL door panels and seat delete fit correctly. Amazing work was done to get it all tight and locked down.

I saw a thread from APEX about needing a E46 to test a set of wheels. So I pinged them and they wanted me to bring my car down. My car was to be a genie pig to test a new setup they offer. What they wanted to test is to see if a square 285 setup would work. Well as from the crap cell phone pics below, it does work LOL. APEX guys were a hoot to hang out with and I am looking forward to buying a set of wheels from them in the near future. Not sure when but they will have a write up and official photos at some point of my visit there. Also meet a few M3 members in the AM and one had a clean Laguna Seca Blue =)

Teaser image of what just arrived today. Since it seems people are only interested in this build thread when I spend money LOL. I have a few more updates later this week.

    Morning Update:

After last year’s Bimmerfest I meat one of the BMW magazine publishers who was there doing a story on that days festivities. I started talking to the representative there about doing an article on my car to share all the work done. After emails, one very cool photo shoot and almost a year the article comes out.

I would have not posted the article for a few months but there is one major issue with it, which was kind of a serious let down. Wait all this time and when it arrives you are like WOOHHOOO.. oh mannn that sucks.

I will give you a hint, the issue is on the first page. The issue might not be that obvious to most but to those who are the forums a lot you will see it fast. There also is a technical issue, on the last page. I will let you guys see if you can see them.

I will post parts received tomorrow =) for the CSL. But here is a part for the 1M.

You know you are hoarder when your room looks like the images below.

The Evolve boxes were the last pieces I was waiting for to do the next major service. I have been stock piling the last few months as you can see. This will be the last major upgrade to this car as I have done all I have wanted to for the moment. Car should be going in for the last bit of upgrades in the next few weeks.

Box showed up with new floor mats. 12 year old ones are still decent but have seen the millage and 12 years of drives. Also got some new O rings for the coming motor work and wheel cover. No longer have break ducts so closing them off from the wheel well.

The Vanos Beisan System arrived YAY. Now I just need to get the WPC bearings and I have all the parts I ordered. Though people keep taking my bearings as they need them last minute. I have had to re-order them for the third time LOL.

Some people saw the car collection in the back ground. Here is a better shot of 80% of them. There is still another cabinet to the left and more below on the left.

Last update is a quick video having a little fun at APEX for the photo shoot HEHE.

    Fun at APEX - YouTube

Ok took a few months but finally got around to removing the CSL Door cards. Gave them to a friend to makes carbon fiber to have the scratches fixed and made to look as good as new. Hopefully I will get them back next week so I can put them back into the car.

Looks like my car made it into the APEX Wheel add. Nice surprise when opening the recent issue of Roundel.

Finally have some progress on the head removal. VANOS has been removed and I get to do some upgrading this weekend =) The shop said they will be able to remove the head in 2 weeks so I can send it down to LA for valve install and all the other upgrades.

One of the local photographers asked me and a few others to do a photo shoot last month. He runs Dare To Be Different Photography and based on the following images he sent me I think they are pretty darn good. I will have parts updates coming in the next few weeks so stay tuned =)

    Last set of M3 Images

I also was able to get some good shots of the 1M finally.

I also was able to get some good shots of the 1M finally.

Some recent updates over the last week.

At the end of April, I lead a day drive to Napa to enjoy the great weather we have been having. Some of the gang here were in attendance. The car is running so much better with the intake flap functioning. I have yet to get the tune back on but just the stock CSL setup is pretty darn amazing.

You know the car runs good when you are being chanced by a McLaren 12C and the owner has no complaints about how fast you are going through the twisties =)

I wanted to list all the parts that I have tried in my quest to make the car into what I envisioned. Some of these parts were a big step in the wrong direction while others definitely were worth doing. Once all the new parts are installed, I will make a master list of all the parts and part numbers.

    UUC RaspX gen I
    UUC Sway bars
    Grouppe M Intake
    Conforti Shark Injector
    Evosport Headers
    SuperSprint Race Cats
    SuperSprint Gen I Headers
Vorstiner CSL roof with sun roof
    Vorstiner CSL bumper With Fogs
    OE 19 Rims
    K&N Pannel Filter
    Painted match reflectors
    H&R Sport Springs
    Koni Adjustable Shocks
    Front Shock tower mount Swap
    Powerchips software
UUC Sway bars (fitted and returned / Never used)

In September 2013 I lead my annual drive to Lake Tahoe. Here are some of the images from Lake Tahoe Drive. This is for those out there who think this is a garage queen, I think NOT. 255 miles and some serious bug death going on in the front as you will see in the last image.

October 30th the CSL door panels arrived.. They are a little rough but they are fixable thankfully. Seller did a great job packaging them and was honest about their condition. Next step is to have the scratches buffed out and place in my door frames which are in better shape. This will complete the full OE CSL look less the front and rear seats.

August 2013 I was on an old Airforce Base for a photo shoot and took some pics of my own with the trusty cell phone. I love the location and need to make the time to go back and take better images using a good camera. For now these still look pretty good for a quick photo opp.

Sorry for not sharing this sooner but I have been busy like most everyone out there. I have been working with terraphantm on making all the CSL function work on the coding side of things. We are 90% there other than needing to redo the H-bridge on the DME. However till he gets a chance to make a new DME we did get oil level to work on my car at least.

As it is the holiday season, I attended the 7th annual Rally 4 Kids event that EuroSunday hosts. This is a event fro Shriner's Hospital to help gather toys for the kids there. We had over 500 cars this year despite the 30 degree weather.

Received my used airbag module to hopefully resolve the airbag light notification. I tried the jumper trick and it did not work. I also tried having the airbags coded out and that did not work. Reason for the codding out not working is most likely because I have has the light on so long. $50 later let’s hope this fix the issue once I get it installed and try to code out the door airbags again.

Yay some parts arrived today. Downside is a lot of the other items I ordered won't be in till late Jan.. booooo

    X1 -- 11367831938 - Vanos gasket
    X2 -- 11121437395 - valve cover stud grommet
    X1 -- 11361401971 - Vanos oil filter
    X2 -- 11367833218 - S62 sprocket hub diaphragm spring and pressure plate
    X12 - 07129905536 - sprocket sleeve bolts
    X1 -- 11317830159 - Exhaust upper chain tensioner guide
    X1 -- 07119963342 - Chain guide mounting bolt washer
    X1 -- 07119963418 - Crankshaft chain tensioner washer
    X2 -- 07119963129 - oil drain hose crush washer
X2 -- 07119963072 - Vanos oil accumulator pipe crush washer

Santa is mean, sent cell phone pics of items that will miss the sleigh..

Santa was late but he did deliver some more parts the day after Christmas.

64317895939 --- CSL Cabin Filter Housing
64317895937 --- CSL Micro Filter Housing Backing
    13727838625 --- CSL Air Filter
    31212282855 --- CSL King Pin - Left

51137897925 --- Left CSL Roof Molding
51137897926 --- Right CSL Roof Molding

I am pleased to finally post that we now have a working flap motor. Thanks to the efforts of Terraphantm and Cyberkaa we can prove that it is possible to make a none CSL into a CSL.

This includes Temp Sensor, Map Sensor with rail, and now the flap motor.

Bimmerfest 2013 was my “bachelor” party as I was getting married the following weekend. My good friend rode shotgun and we lead the group down from Northern California to join the festivities in Southern California.

All of June 2013 was spent on my honeymoon with the new Misses. We took a three week trip to tour the UK and see all the sights and sounds of that part of the works. I was able to meet up with some real CSL owners in Scotland and talk to them what it was like to own the car and what they do for fun across the pond. Wish I had longer to chat with them but did not want to bore the wife to tears. I will make a thread of the travels but here are the pics I got of the real CSL’s. I have a little tweaking to mine to match it up better to the real ones.

NOTE: These CSL did have AC and Radios. Seems most have creature comforts and only a few were the “hardcore ones”

After visiting Scotland the wife and I made are way to Southern England to see Stone Hedge. After Stone Hedge we headed to Dover on the East Side of England. One of the stop on the way to Dover was to see Dunsfold Aerodrome or for you fans out there the Top Gear Test track.

When we got to Dunsfold we were told by the security guard we could not see the facilities or the Top Gear Hanger because McLaren was filming the new MP12-4C GT. The guard opened the gate so we could drive in and turn around to leave. As we were starting to drive out he asked why were there. I told him that we were on our Honeymoon and we just wanted to see where Top Gear was filmed. After he heard that he told us to wait. He came back in a few minutes and said follow me.

The guard gave us a guided tour of the facilities and told us the history of the Aerodrome, who owns it, future plans, and how he used to work there. I could not share the full details of the story for until the new season of Top Gear started

At the Top Gear hanger we got to see the new reasonably priced cars, the trailers that were really the Top Gear production offices and inside at the studio. It is worth to note that production offices are really the production offices, even though they made jokes about it. When we went into the studio hanger it was not setup for filming Top Gear as they just finished filming a upcoming movie. One last interesting thing is the stars that come on the show enter through a storage closet. All the budget for the show goes into the specials and filming.

While there did see the new McLaren Mp12-4C GT being tested. We could not take pictures of it of course but saw it flying down the runway. It was flat black; fly’s like a bat out of hell and sounds like a whaling banshee.

The guard was so cool that he gave us a few t-shirts he had and official Top Gear script from the episode they won the EMY Award. I had to hold of sharing a lot of this as I said as not to get the guard in trouble for showing us around and hooking us up.

After visiting Dover we went to London. While we were touring around we walked by the Park Lane BMW. They had a M3 GTS in the show room that was in the bright orange paint job. Next to the BMW dealer was one of the new BMW I Showrooms for the new I cars. They had an I8 concept and the frame of an I3. It was rather interesting to see them in person rather than images.

While we were in London I convinced the wife to let us spend a day and trek up to see the Evolve guys. We took the train up from London and meet Imran at the train station. We got a ride to the shop in his crazy E39 M5. The car sounded amazing and what little he stepped on the gas it pulled like a freight train. Would have loved to see what it would do unleashed.

We spent the morning at Evolve talking to Imran, Sal and Riz about cars, how the tune for their software for the M3 and how they test cars yada yada. We also talked to them about how they got into cars, their family, and how they started Evolve. It was very interesting to hear about their path to get Evolve where it is today and their backgrounds. If you ever get over to the UK, it is worth the trip to see the shop and meet the crew that does wonders for any performance car.

While we were at Evolve there was several customer cars there in for software tuning. One was an E46 M3 that had an aftermarket CSL airbox installed. This airbox was one of the 4 companies that make a replica box (can’t remember which one sorry). Riz and Sal spent the morning working on the E46 to resolve an install issue and load an Evolve power tune. The Replica CSL airbox looked descent enough but it had the temp sensor to close to the motor and was getting heat soaked. Sal showed me and the customer the data maps and how he changes the files. The software is pretty cool as it displays data in a 3d model.

Here is the old shop. They just purchased the new shop which is in the same complex but is on the other side of the cul de sac and three times as large. It was a fun visit to Evolve and I got to know more about the guys and the shop that programs my car. Sal is definitely a hoot to talk to about his philosophy on cars. Imran is definitely the grounded one and Riz is the sarcastic tech. The combo works as evident in their products and I hope they continue to support the enthusiast’s community.

First weekend I had time to clean the car and get it ready for the 500-mile drive down to Bimmerfest. As it was Mother’s Day I was only able to clay bar the car, clean the engine bay, and polish the wheels/brake calipers. The next few nights are polished, waxing the car, and detailing the interior. I started with the Engine bay first which is worth noting the rag was bright yellow at the start of the cleaning process.

Last steps were to clean the brakes, rims, and interior. When all was said and done it took me about 7 hours to clean four months of dust off, out, and in the car. I guess that is what happened when the car lives for four months in different service and performance shops.

So far, my upgrade choices were driven by performance. I decided I might as well through a little bit of vanity in there so I ordered the first of the vanity mods, which was a CSL badge. I also ordered the CSL Sales brochure so I could have my own copy.

Paint took a week to be completed and I then dropped the car of Friday, March 1st to have the interior done. So hope to have the car back this week with everything done less a bath. Paint and Interior took about a week to complete. When I got the car back from paint and had a few minor issues around the grill that need to be fixed. I will be taking care of those after the interior.

I got the car back from the paint touch ups a week later along with seeing the new interior. Both the interior and paint teams did an excellent job on the work I requests and the prices were fair. As they say, you get what you pay for and the work was A+ Thanks to Sierra Auto Body and Romans in Auburn CA.

I spent Saturday morning on April 20th installing the passenger seat sensor. The Install was easier than I made it to be as I didn’t realize the seat sensor I needed was on the bottom of the old stock seats. So had to go over to storage and get the part and plug it in. Next step is to go to the local BMW shop to clear the passenger airbag code.

I had the following Saturday free and went to the future father in laws shop to adjust the front bumper. Still trying to get it just right but we did close the gap a little more than it was. Will be working on it this weekend again to hopefully get it all just right. Still working on it at the moment.

So if you are going to do something right, GO all the way with it. So I went full vanity and got a new custom plate.

I had Evolve send me a new ECU flash to address a slight running rich issue the car has at start. They also added a CSL rev match, which does a better job than stock SMG tune. The car is idling and running much better than it did with the base Evolve tune.

Here is a sound clip all be it rather short video of the car in action. Sorry I do not have longer clips but I will hope to have more soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cshe4...qJBgZMdYpFLgIA So if you are going to do something right, GO all the way with it. So I went full vanity and got a new custom plate.

Car is off to paint on February 25th 2013 and I hope it will not take as long as it did to install the CSL parts. After paint, I can break in the car for the 500 miles needed to set the DIFF gear. After all the break ins and fluid changes, I will work on the videos and a nice photo shoot of the car.

While the car was away again I decided to do a complete breakdown on the current setup of the car in regards to parts. This also includes all those little parts that never seem to be posted when these projects are done. CSL Parts InstallerCar is off to paint on February 25th 2013 and I hope it will not take as long as it did to install the CSL parts. After paint, I can break in the car for the 500 miles needed to set the DIFF gear. After all the break ins and fluid changes, I will work on the videos and a nice photo shoot of the car.
