Immaculate low mileage 2004 Silver Grey CSL Inspired Build

I'm now at the point where the interior is nearly done. There are a ton of really fun details in the interior, and I acknowledge I have done a really poor job of properly sharing them with you guys.


I had an unexpected and rare day off of work today. To top it off, both of my kids were in daycare for the day. This gave me an opportunity to do a maintenance-detail on the interior and exterior, and take it out for a coastal drive. While out, I took some detailed photos of the interior.















The front seats are the last major component for the interior phase of this build. I will go into detail once they are ordered/received, but the current plan is to go with Recaro Sportster CS, with custom upholstery by AMX Performance. I owe a huge and public thank you to Bry5on. He was incredibly patient answering all my questions about his bespoke Recaro mounting setup. He even helped me order the mounts via Send Cut Send since CAD is far out of my skillset. I am genuinely appreciative of the help, generosity, and the knowledge-base of this community.

By the time I got into the E46 M3 world, Mile End Composites had not been taking new orders for 1-2 years. I was disappointed that I had missed the opportunity, as you only hear extremely positive things about their products.

In the very first post of this thread, I spoke about doing the interior of the car first. That plan still remains the same, but it lives side by side with the new rule I’ve learned while building this car. I’ve said it a few times now, buy parts when you can, not necessarily when you want.

I have no plans to do any paintwork or install any CSL exterior components for 2024. That said, when I stumbled upon Gt4 taking preorders for Mile End Composite’s CSL front bumper, I had to jump on the opportunity. I’ve been racking up CSL parts at a near frantic pace, but it will be quite some time before they all go on.

Here are some photos. I tried to include some detailed shots of both the front and the rear of the bumper. This thing is a piece of automotive artwork.

Is that new upper trim piece titan shadow finish? How well does it match your lower trim piece?

In early November I ordered a Vorsteiner V-CSL diffuser with a lead time of 8-10 weeks. I went with Vorsteiner for a few reasons, mainly being the design. It seems to be the only replica of the CSL diffuser that includes the ridge that lands between painted and unpainted portion. The upper left and right corners are far less rounded than most replicas, and that should eliminate that unsightly gap that most replicas have. Vorsteiner is 30 minutes away from my house and I was able to pick it up to avoid shipping costs and see the product in person. I do want to mention the customer service I received both online and in person was outstanding.

I haven’t had time to do a test fit, but my initial impressions are really positive. The weave is perfect, there doesn’t seem to be any weird misaligned patches near the exhaust tip area like you see on other replicas. The clarity of the finish is great. There was a tiny bit of leftover polish residue but I’d rather do a little bit of cleanup than receive a part that wasn’t properly corrected. The mounting tabs look really solid and beefy. It almost looks like they put a bit of extra epoxy/resin on the tabs so that they could shape the tab for better fitment. There is a metal badge with Vorsteiner's logo double sided taped to the diffuser. It's a really nice little badge, but I'm not sure why anyone would want that on their diffuser. Luckily it looks to be easily removable. It is really a non issue but I thought someone might ask about it. Hardware is included, and weight is 1lb 4.8oz

It is black plastic, it does not have any paint, coatings, or finish on it as far as I can tell. If you need a visual reference, i'd say its about the same as your the plastic on inner door handle. Satin black with a tiny bit of texture.

Man I wondered who picked that trunk up! I unfortunately saw the FS ad too late. Glad its going on a great build though

Continuing on with the theme of buying parts when you can, not necessarily when you want.

Just before Christmas someone posted a reasonably priced (for 2023 market) OE CSL trunk less than 40 minutes away from me. I drove down, confirmed it was a genuine BMW part by inspecting / comparing it to resource images I had saved, then weighing it (yes, I actually brought a bathroom scale).

The seller said it had sat in his garage since 2019, and by the looks of it, he was being honest. There was an incredibly thick layer of dust and dirt on it, and the paintwork had a good amount of scratches and chips. I wasn’t concerned with the paint condition, as it was going to get repainted regardless. Most importantly, it was solid, no structural damage, broken corners, modifications, etc.





I had no doubt it was the real deal and I picked it up as an unexpected Christmas present to myself. I cleaned it up, took a cheesy photo under the Christmas tree, then packed it right back up for storage.




Although the actual paint and install won’t be happening for a long time, I am already preparing for the install by buying all new hardware, pre fitting accessories, and creating the license plate lights wiring harness. Every part on the trunk will be new. I’ll be documenting the entire process and creating a comprehensive DIY. For now, the trunk will sit in storage while I continue on with the interior.
