I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but before I go ahead and reassemble the head, I figured I'd ask to see what the general consensus is in the group.
I'm building an S54 to swap into my rally car, it's nothing crazy, basically a Stock+ build. I'm not chasing high HP numbers, just want it to be reliable. A week ago a local guy listed a head for sale, said it was a "Lang Performance Stage 1" head that had 2k miles on it. Supposedly a rod bearing took a shit and they just swapped out the engine for another. I looked the head over the best I could and decided to buy it. I got it back the the shop and started to inspect/clean/disassemble it when I noticed that the valve springs and retainers didn't look stock. A quick check with a magnet showed that they're most likely titanium and I believe that they are the Supertech spring/Ti retainer kit. I then noticed that the valves looked different and found out that they're Ferrea valves. The one thing that throws me off on the whole "Lang Performance" thing is that it doesn't have a 5-angle valve job... Who knows, whatever. Long story short, it's a really nice head that's flat, has new valve guides and Ferrea valves and this Supertech spring kit with titanium retainers. My gut instinct is to swap in one of the sets of stock springs/retainers that I have but part of me wants to toss it together with the Supertech kit. I'll be running stock cams and planning on a 8200 rpm redline so anything more than stock isn't really needed. My thought was that the stock stuff will last longer and I can probably sell the Supertech kit to recoup some cash, which would be nice. I do like the idea of the Supertech kit but not sure it's really worth it for my application. Thoughts?
