Just in case it is on your bucket list - COTA is going to a member only model in 2027 which means rentals are mostly dead. No more Chin, Edge Addicts and others. PCA might survive but I'd expect significant price increases.

COTA going private in 2027

I am glad I did it last year. It's gonna be a madhouse instructing and it already is there normally. So that will probably be last time doing it there unless PCA somehow continues it into 2027.Build Thread:

I'm guessing one of the reasons COTA is going private is wear and tear on the facility. May be possible that some sort of solo-only event continues but you know the cost will be astronomical. COTA is ok...not worth $500+ a day.Originally posted by samthejam View PostI am glad I did it last year. It's gonna be a madhouse instructing and it already is there normally. What is the cost of a track day COTA now? $375-500 is the norm in CA.Originally posted by bigjae46 View Post

I have not been on Road Atlanta.Originally posted by D-O View PostCrap. Doubt I can get there this summer.
jae - its just okay? Hmmm. How does is compare to Road Atlanta fun wise?
It is definitely cool being on an F1 track and the facilities are mostly first rate. At first the track is overwhelming. T1 to T11 is fun and T12 on is eh. The esses are tricky. BUT...the track attracts a lot of bucket listers that only care about themselves. It is a narcissist haven. So traffic is ALWAYS an issue. Here is how a typical lap goes...
Front straight, higher HP car blows past me. I catch them by T5-6. Stuck behind until T11. They put 15-20 car lengths on me at the end of the back straight. I catch them by T18. Stuck behind until the front straight. Repeat. I've been there a dozen times, I've maybe gotten 10 clean laps in without being held up.
It is a track so it is fun. By the 2nd session on the first day I've usually satisfied my COTA itch. Of the 5 configurations on the 4 tracks I regularly drive nowadays (MSR Cresson 3.1 and 1.7, MSR Houston, Eagle's Canyon, COTA) I would rank COTA 3rd.
There are a couple of cool Mexican dive places nearby that are absolutely worth the risk of food poisoning. I'm sure gentrification will change that. Honestly, Austin now sucks to visit. The cool spots are gentrified or being gentrified so now it is a bunch of hipsters. All the weirdos, musicians, and artists are all gone.Last edited by bigjae46; 02-16-2026, 12:45 PM.

IF you go in the summer 100% pay for a garage space. The pits are soooo hot in the summer its miserable and bakes the car. But the garages even though not A/C'd are very pleasant, the concrete is cool and their is a breeze which makes it seem much more bareable than outside in the open paddock. I won't go in the summer without a garage space.
I'm instructing with Edge Addicts and they are capping instructors at (40) which I don't think they've ever done before and last I heard there is an instructor waitlist now.Originally posted by samthejam View PostI am glad I did it last year. Never been to RA. CoTA is local to me so its the easy button when I instruct, but Jae is right if you are in a fast(er) run group you get into a lot of issues with traffic. I found the novices do much better with traffic control overall ironically. With that said there is such a big speed differential with many cars on track that it also plays a factor. I would say though if you are a track guy you'd appreciate doing it at least once as it is a pretty incredible experience as a whole.Originally posted by D-O View PostCrap. Last I saw with an instructor its around $12-1300 for the weekend.Originally posted by Slideways View PostWhat is the cost of a track day COTA now? $375-500 is the norm in CA.
Also note there was a rumor that CoTA is going to make some changes in the fall that might prevent organizations from having a novice group which means only experience drivers allowed.'09 HP2S, '12 R12GSA, '00 Black 323iT, '02 Alpine 325iT (Track Wagon), '02 Alpine 330iT

$1200 for a weekend but as George Hill mentioned you NEED a garage in the summer. The paddock is a bowl so it traps the heat.Originally posted by Slideways View Post

I'd consider track insurance. I always tell students, if you go off the track is safe but you're going to hit something. Not friendly for the late turn in, lose the rear end and then go off type of maneuvers which is the common ham-fisted move we all make. There are run off areas but you have to make that decision before you turn in.
