They sure can. I nearly had a stroke when one slipped off the magnet and it I feel into the oil pan. Thank God it didn't...

Just drop the oil pan and then replace the bearings and upgrade the rods and throw a turbo drain in the pan. Then turbo charge your car. You know...to make it seem intentional.
