Bump - curious, are these wheels actually selling for $3500-$4000 used now? I see them listed at that price but they seem to sit there (at least some of my local listings).
I was in the market for them about 2 years ago and could find them new for $2500 and now it looks like the fronts are no longer available and suddenly they're one of the most expensive BMW wheels ever? Sheesh. They're beautiful wheels but can people really justify $4,000 for a set of used wheels?
What's the likelihood of BBS making new fronts? Anyone have any news on why these went NLA and if BMW has a history of bringing NLA back into production?
BMW has brought NLA parts back a few times, but not wheels that I know of, also the manufacturer BBS went bankrupt since then, so likely all tooling is long gone since the last wheels were made in 2014. Which is well over a decade ago now.
They won’t be made again, I am pretty certain.
I have quite a few of these wheels, also some new in box and others in like new condition. It doesn’t make sense selling them for cheap, they won’t be made again, think about what their value would be in 5 years. Even if someone makes a perfect replica (despite IP issues coming into play) the originals would always be worth more.
What are folks doing now that these are NLA? Any shops they can recreate the finish to high accuracy or create quality replicas?
Not really. Prince wheels in OH (iirc) has the old shadow chrome (e46/e39) process down really good, better than anyone else I've seen.
We live in a new world in case you haven't noticed. The bottom line is all that matters now, not the quality that we grew up with. Enjoy your memories and whatever cool shit you got in the 20th century or shortly thereafter.

Goodness gracious, we need to go on a canyon run ASAP.

Monroe, NC (Charlotte) for anyone interested. They did my 163Ms for my zcp. Not to nitpick, because I disappointingly agree with your broader point, but they do better with the E39M/shadow chrome than E46M/163M which I believe is or was or has been called in official literature as Dekorsilber.
The actual guy spraying the powder asked to speak w me after seeing a few notes I provided - we went over the blue hue in certain light and all the things. I sent pics of NIB extra rears I have etc. they did AIGHT but they’re slightly darker than genuine; I try not to think about it tbh. Very nice people tho and their work on e39 wheels is indeed top notch
