Hey, so over this past weekend i planned to install my SS exhaust. I went to the stealer mid last week to pick up some necessary parts. Namely: The 4 exhaust nuts (# 5 in the picture below), 4 bolts (# 6 in the picture below), and the two rear section gaskets (# 3 & 4 in the picture below). I bought the hangers (# 7 in the picture below) from an online source because i couldn't justify a $50+ premium for the BMW roundel stamped in the rubber.

Now the important part:
I get the exhaust off the car pretty quickly, 45 min at most. Pop the gasket off the drivers side pipe, this gasket slips over the driver's side mid pipe. I grab the new BMW gasket and it's 1/2 an inch too big..
So now I have to wait until today to pick up the right part. I get to the dealer and explain what happened and that i need the smaller gaskets. So, they look up the part number, and walk out with the same f***en gaskets I brought to return. I explain to them once again that this gasket does not fit on my exhaust. The parts guy tells me they rolled the part to the e46 exhaust gasket. They have become so application specific that they can't just bring you the right part, they need to know what model it's for. What to do,.... what to do.....
As a last effort I ask them to look up the part for a 95 M3 (obdI). Guess what, the guy goes back and brings me the right part.
Moral of the story:
1. Dealer sucks.
2. If you need the exhaust gaskets #3 and #4 for any e36 M3, buy the OBDI parts.
3. Before you walk out of the dealership check that the gaskets have a ~2" (48mm) ID.
BTW: I just tried to look up the part number for the OBDI gaskets on realoem.com and they don't even list one. The only part number listed is for the OBDII gaskets, which have been rolled to e46 gaskets. CHEW ON THAT

Just to show you how big the difference is the, the correct parts fit inside the ID on the wrong e46 parts.
