See the third item down. This is also what I'll go with. I already have the DSSR from them and for now will just use the Z3 shifter. I will switch to the AKG when my funds are a little more free to be spread around.

Ahh ok. Excuse the noobness, but what makes it so special?

This thread breaks my heart. I drove a car with one of these recently and was blown away by how well it shifted.

The price was making it difficult, as was struggling over the DSSR cost (I can see the benefit).

You talking about the UUC SSK? Rogue? AKG?

The biggest turn off for me for the UUC SSK was the issue outlined by the OP of this thread, and since reliability is a huge issue for me when considering "adding" things to the car, that got me thinking. Some more fishing around through the threads seemed to find only about 25% of UUC users happy with their SSK, while other brands have lots of positive feedback.

It was a UUC SSK I drove.

If I am going to drop $500 on a shifter upgrade that is a pita to install (compared to domestics I have done in the past) it darn well better last a long long time.

I wish you guys weren't so desperate to spend $400-500 for these pieces of ****. Friend of mine had his ssk break while leading a race recently. A victory turned into a DNF thanks to Rogue.

Another reason I'm getting the AKG setup

I am pretty certain that I will never buy another UUC part again, due to their lack of customer service! I prolly will get the same one this winter too, do I smell group buy?

                      Here was my experience:

                      http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1419986

After JBWelding the socket to the carrier I convinced UUC that the problem was in fact the shifter. They did rebuild it for free so I can't complain.

The shifter/DSSR is nice once the problems are fixed but I am not sure it is ~$400 nice. Fortunately it came on the car already.

How does the AKG one mount to the car? Do you have to drill into the transmission tunnel? From the pics on their website it appears that way, and I've never seen one in person.

I wouldn;t sat anyone is desperate to spend $500, rather we desire a better than OEM shifter, and the only options are $500. Unfortunately none of them seem to be worth the cost, so a vacuum in the market is created.

Why would care if people were desperate? Why are many of your posts condescending?

Are you using the Z3 lever with a ZHP knob?

I didn't replace my stock lever when I refreshed my shifter and it's already starting to feel sloppy again (it *has* been about a year and a half, but still...) so I was thinking of going back in there, doing Delrin bushings and a Z3 lever and maybe the homejob weighted selector rod (wrapping it in solder), but I've heard that Z3 lever + ZHP knob makes the shifter way too short... Your thoughts?

I've also got a UUC EVO3. I bought it used. At first, (actually, the entire first year) I loved it. Then I hated it.

Those little set screws loosened up constantly, regardless of how much I cleaned the threads and how much loc-tite I put on them. I ended up pulling the shift carrier while doing my rear subframe overhaul a few months ago and slathered JB Weld in on the two mating surfaces, then loc-tited the set screws back in place after cleaning everything up perfectly.

If it fails again, I'll replace the shift carrier (why not?) and go with a different SSK. The locking mechanism on my UUC EVO3 doesn't work well anymore either. Once the car gets up to temperature, I can twist the shifter both clockwise and counter-clockwise. I'm thinking of drilling it out and putting a larger bolt through it to secure the two shafts together more firmly.

                              Would not buy again.

there are three holes already in the transmission tunnel. The holes for the shifter just bolt through them...
