Like I asked earlier, what's so special about the AKG shifter? I'm not attacking it or anything, I just am curious.

Why would care if people were desperate? Why are many of your posts condescending?
Because 75% of the mods on forums are nothing but HYPE, and when people who have experience with these cars say what the newer guys don't want to hear, they go ahead and ignore the advice that's been plastered all over these walls for years and buy these parts anyways because they think they know better. A majority of them will praise a product because it's simply what they bought and they don't know that the change isn't actually better. Many of them are the same ones still asking n00b questions.

Everyone complains about OEM shifters. Replace the bushings and live with it, it's really not as bad as some guy you never met makes you think it is. You don't need to 'upgrade' everything on the car.

Trust the guys that are trying to save your money, not spend it.

So it eliminates that stupid rear rubber piece that the shifter arm sits in? The only rubber piece that gets left there with all the UUC delrin bushings for the ssk/dssr.

Hmm. Extremely tempted to just dump the UUC stuff now and get that.

yes.... the rubber carrier would be gone at that point.

Totally with you on this. DSSR with fresh OEM bushings and shifter are great. Plus you are less likely to $ shift. Who cares if you can shift like a drag racer . . . . time is made in the corners. Save you money for Driving Schools/track time.

OP did make a good solution to a poorly designed attachment fixture of the UUC product and deserves a

I enjoy my Z3M SSK. Throws feel like 40% shorter. I got the lever from tischer for like 65$ and bent it myself. The whole thing cost me like 90$.

I never replaced that cylinder piece the holds the shifter arm. I think its #7 on the diagrams. I just bought a U joint bracket, drilled 2 perfect holes in the transmission shift tunnel, put the bracket in and tightened it down. The shifter arm itself has absolutely 0 play movement and it brought the shifter farther from the drive-shaft.

I could post a pic later.

90$ and I am more than satisfied. I can't imagine having to pay 5 bills for a ssk....

AKG for sure if I was going to though.

Now for just the 5th gear lean and I am set.

How's the notchiness and in-gear slop? I don't like you right now. You always make me spend money after reading your threads haha

epj3: First off, thanks for your post and observations. If I hadn't read it, I probably would not have checked mine...

I've had my Evo 3 + DSSR for around 5 years. I hadn't had a single issue till this year, whereby I almost missed a shift and I noticed that the shifter had progressively gotten more notchy coupled with several millimeters of play. I took a look at the shifter and to my surprise, 3 bolts were holding the "cup" in place while the other 3 were MIA.

I don't want to crucify UUC in general because I've had at least 4.5 years of excellent shifting, but having these bolts "disappear" was a bit of a wakeup call and IMHO, an inherent design flaw...

I pulled the boot off the shifter and noticed the carrier cup bolts (6x 3mm allen bolts) were not tight. I tightened them up best I could in limited space with a tiny allen key - ie not very much. It got better, til recently when I noticed 4 out of the 6 bolts were missing entirely, assuming they fell out over winter.
I'm not so sure of "design flaw" - in the literally thousands of UUC Evo3 shifters sold over the years, I can't think of more than one other instance of the 6-bolt design having broken bolts.

FWIW, the initial installation of these bolts calls for loc-tite (included with the kit)... without loc-tite, the normal vibration and back-and-forth motion of shifting will cause the bolts to back out, be over-extended, and break. The other instance I did see was clearly installed without loc-tite.

But none of that matters - as with anything UUC-related, we do ask that you call us first (nobody here on the message board is fixing your problem! )... and we would take care of you with the LIFETIME WARRANTY on this part.
