    E36 Coupe OEM Roof/Bike Rack

    Hey guys,

Haven't posted in a while, but unfortunately I need a bicycle rack for my E36 M3 coupe. I know there are primarily 3 options...Thule, Yakima, and an OEM rack, and I have heard that the OEM rack doesn't come in contact with the paint (sits under the weather sealing), whereas both the Thule and Yakima racks do. Does anybody have any links as to where I could purchase one of these (the OEM rack)? As well as a bicycle attachment (I would really prefer one that keeps the front wheel on, as opposed to attaching to the fork).

I usually take a bus to my campus, but the buses around me only have 2 spots to load a bike onto, and I want to have a backup way to take my bike to campus if I need to get to class.

    Thanks!

    -Rob

Sedans had an OEM rack. I do not believe they ever offered an OEM one for the coupe.

How much did you end up selling it for if you don't mind me asking?

Oh, nice. I was under the impression there was nowhere to mount the coupe roof rack and thus they didn't make one. The sedan has like, integrated mounts hidden under the top lip near the doortops or something.

They make a great extruded aluminum rack for the Sedan that has pin mounts under the weatherstiping. I recently bought a couple of Yakima High Rollers for my car on Amazon for $143 shipped. It is by far the best bike rack I have seen. It sits relatively low, looks great and I can get the bike up , mounted and secure in about ten seconds. (Tried rehearsing a Nascar style bike load for fun) Great design. Thule's version looks very ungainly by comparison.

make sure you do more research though

althought thr bmw brand may be found cheaper, are the bmw accessory mounts (ski, bike, snowboard) more expensive than the yakima or thule equivalents? will the yakima/thule equivalents fit the bmw rack? and other questions

I m sure the Yakima and Thule are better proiducts and if their only shortcoming in your eye if how they touch the paint, then you can add a buffer (rubber pad, or something like that) between the mount and paint

On my Corrado I used some 3M Clear bra material between the rack and the paint. Did a great job.

I think Thule is overated for the most part though. All my Thule stuff has rusted out or fused together over the winters. It is pathetic that our Thule roof box mounts have rusted, my bars are rusted, my Corrado mounts have rusted. The spare key for our Thule Atlantis roof box has rusted and the other key broke in one of the locks. You can buy a Yakima interface for their products that will work with either Thule bars or the BMW extruded rack. It is expensive for what it is. I made my own out of wood and steel that sits lower on the E36. For my E46 I have made my own crossbar mounts that use Thule bars (Rusty with the Black plastic delaminating, but still hanging in).

Yea, I've been trying to find the BMW bicycle attachment, and the cheapest I've been able to find it for is $140. I don't know about Yakima, but when I looked up a Thule system the base was $330 and the bike attachment was $170, so yes the OEM one is still cheaper.

I know the sedan literally has bolt holes to fit a rack, but I believe the coupe system still fits under the weather sealing or in the rain tracks...whereas the Yakima/Thule ones literally have pads that rest straight on top of the roof.
