I have the OEM rack and it is essentially a Thule system with customized bases. There are studs underneath the weatherstripping for attaching the feet, but they still require a rubber pad. It came with the car when I bought it but the PO told me it cost him about $600.

that is really nice on the sedan. however, i can see putting a snowboard or maybe a bike on there. i have 2 kayaks... i think i'll leave those for the truck to handle.

Hmm, that certainly doesn't look like the OEM rack. It looks like a normal Thule rack which rests on the roof like I was talking about.

I thought the OEM one was more like this:

My bad. I was going off what the PO told me. It looks like Thule made a system with OEM fitment, but obviously is not the OEM rack.

Damn. Looks like I won't be strapping any of my friends to the roof.

No worries man! Sweet looking rack nonetheless. Have you ever looked under the pads to see if it has done anything to the paint?

That is not the Oe Rack from my understanding, unless BMW has two versions. Here is mine. It does not touch the paint and mounts with two locating points per corner.

Haha yea, well I would hope I wouldn't run into any situations where I would need to strap a girl to my roof.

Does anybody actually have a picture of an E36 coupe with an OEM rack on it, though?

On real OEM, they only have a PN for the new rack.

I bought mine used on Ebay several years ago. I can attach or disconnect it in a matter of minutes and it fits in the trunk nicely.
