If u want a first track day story from one od my students at Road America, let me know. To say the least, its not good, and that's with an instructor in the car
Haha Cal you're really making me regret my $100 for an open lap day...but I really can't wait to track the car. Car club events seem to really dry up once summer ends.
not a fan of open lap days for a couple reasons...
1) they usually attract the "red mist" folks who think they know how to drive better than they really do, and make things dangerous (my experiences)
2) no assigned instructors for the novices, unless you specifically ask for one
3) they are not covered under HPDE insurance due to #2
4) you dont learn as much, and its "wasted" track time, because you are just out there, to be out there, not to actually LEARN, which is the reason for going to the track in the first place, not to burn up consumables, and waste money

5) reasons 1-4 all over again
but damn, $100 for a day is cheap as shiet...
Yeah man. 100 for six hours of track time, more or less. And it's in November, so I'm hoping it'll be pretty empty. Also planning on recruiting an instructor between now and then. I'm helmet shopping right now.
Nope I am fine with it and aware of track behavior, plus I am running solo in novice/beginner class.
That's crazy! I have had track experience since 1991, and still learn PLENTY every time I go to the track. Admitidly, I have only been on the track 2 times in the past yr. With that said, I will absolutely have an instructor next time I hit Road America in the spring. (I probably have driven Road America 10 times) The whole point is to Improve Your Skill Set. It is very difficult to critique your driving, while you are on the track, because there are so many variables. What better way to sharpen your skillset? GET AN INSTRUCTOR. It doesn't make you a bigger man by going without an instructor. Hell, I have driven Road America far more times than Calvin, but certainly will have him ride along if he is there with me!

Yep. Flying is the same way. You *can* learn by yourself, but its so much easier to learn when you have someone to point out what you can do to improve. And it's even better when you can teach them something too.
In the ot tradition, I love to fly in small aircraft. I get over to the Bahamas now and then on business and a couple times have flown on "vintage air" There planes are "vintage" Beachcraft twin props" Was landing on a remote island one time and had huge cross winds. It was like doing a big tank slapper in the air! Fun stuff!
Island hopping is awesome. Coolest flight I ever did was out to marthas vineyard. Just gotta make sure you have enough altitude to glide to land if necessary.
should have an instructor for HPR...time to see if that zionsville is worth a damn
