Or do it yourself because it takes 30 minutes if you are only setting front toe.

Yeah, I have seen a number of "home brew" alignment rigs but I have never bothered. First I don't have need to do an alignment all that often. Second, when I do it is generally because I have made some type of change (new parts, etc.) and really need a complete alignment. IDK, maybe I will give it a try sometime.

Ramps and a tape measure is all you need. Put the car on ramps so that the front wheels are loaded. Lock the steering wheel in the center position. Pick a point on the tire tread that is easy to find on the opposite tire. Adjust the tie rods until the distance between the two tires is equal front to back. This will give you zero toe. If you want to be sure of the adjustment, back the car half way down the ramps, then back up and check your numbers again.

Since this thread is back, I'm surprised no one mentioned the thin-profile wrench one needs to R&R the inner tie rods. The park tools combo wrench is solid enough for the job, doubles as a fan clutch tool, and is easily found at most bicycle shops.

I think I ground down a large Harbor Freight adjustable wrench. Now I've got lots of thin profile wrenches.

Thanks. I'm planning on going to Harbor Freight today to find a crows foot so I can torque it. (I'm not sure if they will have a 32mm)

Amazon also displayed a wrench when I purchased the tie rods.

I have not used it yet but I got the Inner Tie Rod Removal Set - Item 69619 from Harbor Freight Tools. I hope one of the sizes below will work.

                    SAE: 1-3/16 in., 1-1/4 in., 1-5/16 in., 1-7/16 in.

                    Metric: 14mm, 17mm, 33.6mm

For what it's worth, the tie rod removal set I borrowed / rented from O'Rilley (sp?) didn't work. I think I used a pipe wrench and / or channel locks to remove the old ones. Can't remember how I got the new ones on.

Hey guys, I'd like to replace my tie rods and fca assembly, so I was going thru the parts list in here, but I can't seem to find the lock washers on real oem, what's the dealio? has this been superseded?

Edit: I figured out which one it is, it's a rainy day and my brain was on idle mode, but here is a better question...do you guys use Loctite on the inner tie rod threads? I've read that these come with Loctite from the factory, and in a diy video a guy applied red Loctite, right before he drank a 40 OZ of malt liquor, they seem like reliable sources, but for the ones who have done this, have you applied Loctite on the inner tie rods? At least the blue one?

                          hi Falciott,

A guy who did the alignment and a mechanic at Harbor Frieght told me to use Loctite on the inner tie rod ends.

I found the lock washers at http://www.turnermotorsport.com

This is a list of what I bought.

                          turnermotorsport.com

                          Genuine BMW Securing Plate - 32111136526 - $3.90 for 2

                          Genuine BMW Steering Tension Strap - 32131094100 - $5.90 for 2

                          Genuine BMW Steering Tension Strap - 32111137132 - $5.90 for 2

                          Steering Rack Boot - E36 Z3 - 32211139786 - $19.90 for 2

                          Amazon.com

                          Lemfoerder tie rod W01331665062LEM $86.53

                          Lemfoerder tie rod W01331665063LEM $85.74

I need to find a tool to install the tension strap.

The boots that I bought from http://www.turnermotorsport.com, came with the tension straps.

I changed mine last week and did not use the items below.

Genuine BMW Securing Plate - 32111136526

                              - I did not see these mentioned in the Bentley manual.

                              - I did not see these on my car.

                              - Someone at the dealership did not see these on their diagram and told me that they were not needed on OEM tie rods. (I was instructed to use loctite on the inner tie rod by 2 people)

                              Genuine BMW Steering Tension Straps - 32131094100 & 32111137132

                              - I got the install tool for $30 at Pep Boys (matched Sears price) but I wasn't able to get the strap on the boot.

                              - I decided to use zip ties but someone at the dealership told me to use hose clamps instead of zip ties.

                              - The straps also come with the boots mentioned above. So, if you buy the boots, you will not need the extra straps.

                              Steering Rack Boot - 32211139786

                              - These did not fit because the opening on the tie rod is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches when the tie rod is only about 1/2 inch in diameter. Some models might have bushing inside the boot but mine didn't and I didn't order the bushings. So, I used my old boots.

I installed the tie rods as the Bentley manual instructed and used loctite.
