OP: If you're really serious about the car, do your self a favor and spend he $150 bucks on a pre-purchase inspection. That's step 1. Actually, that's used car buying 101. If you're not willing to shell out the $150 to find out what is wrong before you buy, then the comments about your financial statement weren't unfounded.

Step two is taking the laundry list of items that a $6500 e39 M is going to have to realoem.com and pricing out the parts. FYI: 1 ignition coil costs $65 at TRM. Plugs> $15. You'll need 8 of each.

Step three is estimating labor and adding that to the parts total. If that number, plus your acquisition cost comes in below what you reasonably expect to get for the car upon selling, then sure go for it. But considering it will cost around $800 to change plugs and coils, I suspect you'll be in the red before you know it.

I agree with all this, but step 1 should be join M5Board and read read read. Read as much as you can about the vehicle. Figure out how easy any of the DIY's really are, or how tough they'll be. Maybe you dont have the tools for some of the DIY's. Figure out, from actual owners, what parts are going for and find out where they get most of their parts.

I agree with the PPI as well, but I think that even considering buying an e39 M5 for that cheap is a bad move. The only time someone should consider buying an e39 M5 for that cheap is someone who has a large amount of time, money and knowhow and even then a PPI may not be necessary. The OP seems to have none of that.

I wouldn't even worry about what the guy said, unless the car was still up for grabs, then I'd understand why he'd text you, if it wasn't...then rubbing it in your face was exactly the reaction he wanted, in which case chances are that he's a lying bastage, and it was probably something a bit more then just a maf

I can't really think of any MAF failure alone that would lead to the symptoms described.

They're both really great guys, so it doesn't matter either way.

                  A) He's probably lying to you

                  B) Theres still a reason why the car is $6500, and a broken MAF is not it

                  Would. Not. Buy.

Run the codes and pm what they are. We can go from there... I know all this side talk would not be tolerated on the m5 board. If its running on less than 8 cylinders, it is not the maf, cps sensors, etc...

If you want to check the maf's just unplug them. CPS sensors blatty, exhaust...etc

Just back from vacation and saw this thread.... as an E39 M5 owner... well. I love this car over and above my M3.

HOWEVER... I would not go anywhere near the vehicle you are thinking of. It's one thing to keep up with maintenance... a little pricey but they are worth it. To repair something you don't know what the problem is? The seller probably is desperate to dump it cause he doesn't have the money to repair it. Unless you have a mechanic you trust that knows these M5's to check it out and give you some insight to the the repairs it will need... just look somewhere else for one.
