I think if the guy likes the car. You guys should just leave it alone. I don't think he expected an ovation but at least he doesn't deserve to get hammered. It is just like my LED tails, I like them and anyone who doesn't like them, can kiss my ass!
Not what I was expecting to see by the description... quite disappointing honestly.
Lots of work to do, as the others have addressed already, but there is a lot of potential for a nice street spec M3. I dont know how I feel about the interior yet though...
Please keep the impact strips. They talked me out of painting mine. I really like yours?
I think you (and probably the OP in this thread) miss the point about why painting these moldings looks like a hack and does not complement the look of the M3.
Granted, most people on this forum only prefer OE or near OE look. And the criticism of having these moldings painted is almost always validated as soon as your eye compares the finish of the painted molding with the body. Simply put, they look like crap and don't complement the look of the car because they don't match.
Why? Because they are TEXTURED and therefore will never match the body.
In other words, there is no uniformity in color texture.
So if you're hell bent on painting them, there's a right way to do it and a wrong way. Doesn't mean you'll convince anyone that it's the way the M3 should look. But at least you will have done it right!
Early E36's up to about April 1995 had smooth bumper strips. So if you're going to paint them then those are the one's that need to be painted. I have NEVER seen anyone on the forums take the time to do it "right." Take a look at any BMW from the factory and show me one that has textured moldings/bumper strips painted body color.
Unfortunately however, the M side moldings never came in a smooth finish. Therefore, you'd have to have those sanded to match. Basically means more labor more money.
Only time I remember it being done right is when AC Schnitzer came out with the British Racing Green CLS II.
Here it is done properly (whether or not you like the look):
I was expecting the OP to get flamed horribly for buying such a heavily (and, to most on this forum, tastelessly) modified car. Instead, OP was given some relatively common, constructive criticism. I guess if OP can't handle that, then perhaps a relatively-purist forum was not the place to go. Maybe that's why bf.c's membership is booming...

OP has an RS4 so doesn't need to give a shit what people think of his M3...
