Can a Mercedes C36 beat a 98 M3 auto?

What's a C36? I'm not up to date on Mercedes body styles.
That's not like a CLK55 or something AMG is it?
They had a C43 right?
Straightline, most of those AMG's are beasts, but the M will get it in the turns.
BMW just has nothing on the newest Mercedes stuff. The CL65 is just crazy! 7xx lb-ft of torque? man, that must be sweet. -

well MB did make a c36, in 1996 and 997, then in 1998 it turned into the c43.
the c36 is an inline 3.6l 6. Hand built by AMG produces 268 hp and around the same trq.
From what i have read is that is very close to the m is speed but the m will kill it in the turns.
Now for some more info. The w202 was produced from 1993-1999. it was the first gen c-class. In it there were two amg models the c36 and c43. The c43 is a 4.3l v8 produces 302 hp and 302 ft lbs.
the second gen c-class is the w203 that is the c32, a 3.2l supercharge v6. Produces 349 hp and around the same ft. lbs.

If you had a stick I would put my bet on you, but since it is an auto I think the tables turn. THe W202 C36 runs high 5's to 60, and mid to low 14's. As I understand it the E36 M3 auto is a low 6's car, and mid 14's. Might be a tossup, but I think you are slightly outgunned.

C36 is faster 0-60 and sadly outhandles the m3 as well.... but as for driving pleasure... the mercedes sux. The steering is limp and the suspension is quite firm compared to the E36. I believe that most people can sanely drive the e36 faster... but it's true that with the same experienced driver the C36 is is slightly faster. I'd still take the M3 tho.Comment

I think what you are thinking about is the W201 190E 2.3 16. Good cars, quite a rocket for their day. Not as nice as an E30 M3, but still they held their own well.
Thats very interesting about the C36. I never heard it had higher limits than an E36 M3, but I did know the car wasnt as user friendly. It was a very nice car, but just like the newer AMG's verses M cars, the car might do more on one aspect, but lacks in more areas, and really lets the M's shine.

i have a 1997 bmw e36 m3 , my mom has a 1997 mercedes c36 AMG (rare)
ive driven her car.. and just wow - but i think a manual e36 can take it with the amg being automatic.. but believe me, the c36 amg is insaneComment
