    OE radio

OE radio now non-functional due to a busted volume control--radio turns on but volume control spins freely with no apparent effect on the volume-if it ever works at all, it is only in reverse, i.e. counterclockwise makes it LOUDER---go figure--question is---can it be fixed or is it even worth it to try--if not, I am looking for advice on aftermarket replacement units--are there any true slide-in replacements--I was hoping to keep the lighting and appearance similar to stock because, lets face it, the center stack looks so bitchin when it is lit up at night-

seems a drag to trash the whole unit for a malfunctioning volume control

    thanks

Simple replacement. Call your company who makes your OE radio(probably Alpine). Give them the info they need and order the attenuator(not the knob, but the "adjustable resistor" behind the knob), replace it yourself or at local electronics repair shop.

I doubt the attenuator costs more than $20 shipped.

thanks!!!I should have noted it is a 98 M3-I have to check the dealer label I saved, I think OE mfr. may be Harmon-Kardon??

Pull your radio out and see, careful not to unplug the harness unless you have the CODE. There is one screw behind each flap(2 flaps total) on the side of your radio. Flip those suckers out and unscrew away.

Oh yeah, if you know how to solder then it's a do-it-yourself thing.

you can find headunits for much cheaper than $150 or much cheaper than a dealer replacement on www.bimmerforums.com in the classfieds section.

buy a nakamichi cd 400 - direct bolt on - u just have to crimp wires for the wiring harness .

made the stock Hk system worth listening to .

                            Hey!

I replaced mine before Christmas with an Alpine. I'll get you the model #. Anyway, I bought a wire harness from Tweeter, true plug-n-play (seriously) and it fit exactly in the hole, no room to move, it looks beautiful. It wasn't expensive, like 200 bucks and the best part is it's orange and matches the other lights.

Let me know if you want the model #.

Nakamichi has the OE look and color. The sound processor is amazingly clean.

An all black Blaupunkt (O.E. for Porsche and once O.E. for BMW and Mercedes) is nice also, German made. Has incredible sound quality as well.

I have the older version of the Skyline Series, the Tokyo. Has soft buttons like your A/C controls, OE radio....etc. Not "clicky" buttons like most aftermarket radio's, press a button on the A/C control and then press one from the OBC; that's what I'm talking about.
