If you're adament about keeping to stock, look on ebay every couple days for the BMW Business in-dash CD unit. I've seen these in some E36s, and it's nice. What a shame that BMW didn't offer these as standard instead of the tape. First time i saw that, I twitched my head to the side, and started wondering whether i was tripping. Downside is the in-dash stock unit is just as bad for sound as the tape one. The HK speakers and amp are always told to be bottlenecked by the stock receiver. My two cents.

If you're adament about keeping the dash stock, check ebay every couple days for the BMW Business in-dash CD headunit. I remember seeing it for under 200. If you've never seen it in an e36, you'll definately twitch your head for a sec and wonder if you're seeing things. The only reason I wouldn't go in that direction is because the in-dash cd unit is just as crappy as the tape unit. The speakers, especially the HK setup and amp, are definately bottle-necked by the stock receiver. Even a cheap, clicky, neon lightsy, sony or kenwood would sound better.

Can't expect much out of stock. =\ Tis true though, it is bottlenecked because the source is from the head unit processor.

A.vixen: would appreciate stock # for Alpine unit-will also check out nakamichi and Blaupunkt-as I can drive the wheels off the damned car, but can't hope to wire a freakin' thing on board, I better get a true slide-in replacement-

I had no idea all this time that the stock unit was inadequate-a shame, since, as I recall, the HK with CD changer was a mucho dinero option
