he said his lights don't work...those should go on even if the security system is killing the ignition right? So I'd probably rule out the security system until he can get the lights on which would be related to a lot of things people have mentioned...mainly fuses, negative terminal connection on battery etc...

Sounds like it's time to have it towed to the mechanic I think his problems are beyond what he is willing to attempt to fix.

what alarm is it. clifford g what. g4 just means generation 4 there should be something like intelliguard or concept or somthing like that.. i just finished installing my intelliguard 9000 and it was a biaaaaaaaach.. anyway.. if you still can't get it started... where are you located.. hayward CA?? if so then maybe i'll drop by and get your M started.. good luck let me know if you will need help...

couple things to check.. i take if you didn't install the alarm.. clifford alarms have sep fuses... if the starter or ign kill was wired properly by the installer and the alarm fuses blow the car will not start... also try this.. put the key in ON. then find the starter.. starter should have two wires going to it.. one is thick 12 v power. other is 12 v solenoid starter switch. check to make sure you have 12 at the thick wire.. then take a piece of wire and connect the two wires and the car should start.. good luck

Same here. I live in hayward. I do know a place where they work on cars, its on sunnavale, its not a dealer so you won't get nailed. I'm pretty sure they do electrical on bmw's. if you want the number, tell me.

Have you recheck the connections that is part of the electric seats or panels that you removed. Go backwards...may be you forgot to reconnect some cables. If your main head lights are working then it is not the battery. Also if you have disconnected the battery from the car, your radio may have to be reset at the dealer...an anti-theft feature. Don't panic ..you will figure it out.

Ok, this is a reach. I killed my battery once by leaving my interior lights on. In the morning my battery was dead, well... mostly dead. The interior lights were on, real dim like. The dash lights lit when I turned the key, but they were dim, my factory stereo was dead. Turned the key and got nada. I threw a charger on the battery and it freaked out. The meter flipped from full to dead, back and forth every second or two. I was worried. I quickly killed the charger and disconnected the positive terminal on the battery (thinking that there was short somewhere, it seemed rational) anyway, when I got home later that day, before I was about to call for a tow, I decided to try to charge the battery with the charger. With the positive terminal disconnected from the car, the charger worked like normal, no freaking out. So hours later, battery charged, I hooked the battery back up and crossed my fingers. It started up fine and has been fine ever since. I guess disconnecting the battery for a while reset something in the electrical system. Strangely, before this happened my fuel guage was freaking out, giving false readings, etc. and after it was fine. I don't know if leaving your battery disconnected for a while, (over night?) would do anything benificial, but I don't think it could hurt anything either. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Have you recheck all the connection that you may have touched when you were removing the panel and seats. May be go through the check again, what you did at each step of removing and installing the panels and seats. When you trun the ignition kep..do all the lights come on as usaul..just no starter motor sound..can you hear the electric fuel pump?

Another thing you might try is call the service department at the BMW dealer, sometimes you might get a real nice service manager and he may offer some advice over the phone..depending on how you approach it. Never hurt to ask ..like you are doing now

Actually, I am suspecting the alarm. I would try to find the alarm brain and I would check the fuses to it as well as any relays. There are internal and external relays to the alarm which may be shorting out and causing a short in the light circuit. All the system problems you have described could be related to alarm functions(ie start & lights). If that is not he cause, I would consider taking the car in.

hehe, please tell me you don't take your car to the dealer everytime you kill the battery to get the radio reset? : )

The idea of pulling the battery for a bit is good - I've not had that problem with this car, but in another car... yanking it, putting a charger on it, and letting it sit for a good while seemed to fix it.

You did say the seats were manual, correct? so, their should be fewer wires to screw up... I think that even if the sensor for the seat belt starts messing up, all it will do is cause the light to stay on. Anyone wanna pull that fuse and confirm for this guy that cars still start even if this isn't getting any power? I'm at work at the moment - obviously working hard, huh? : )

Yes the BMW radios has that feature..check the manual. I've never had that happen on my E36 M3. The manual states that you can re enter the code yourself, 5 digit code, if the power to the radio is removed. Sorry for the confusion. You can also cancell the feature. All this is in the radio manual. Hope he gets his car started. We all like to know what the cause is..so we will know what to do the nexxt time

That makes sense. Hope you get it fixed as you will have a difficult time selling a car that won't start.
