    No ASC here

yeah for those that still havnt got it.. when the light is on in the cluster, that's a warning sign to remind you that asc is off. The asc is on as default because.. duh... so you don't forget to turn it on. There is really no need to turn if off.. ever.. unless you are racing, trying to lose control, or stuck in some loose ground.

I recently got caught in a sudden snow storm. I have summer tires. At one point i lost traction and the dash light started blinking. I thought that was a nice touch. I have to agree with most of you. Why turn it off, unless you are racing.

Wait a sec, everybody, I was told by an M3 serv tech that even if you turn it off that in the event the car thinks that its life is coming to an end that it will/can reactivate by itself during the emergency. I sorta believe this cuz it happened to me one night. It was 2:00 am I was getting gas when a older but very modded 993 pulls in next to me, while I was inside I see the guy walking around the back of my car. We get to talking, turns out he plays for the St Louis Cardinals as a 2 nd baseman. I dont remember his name but he was about 22-24 , hispanic and fricken huge. It was during Spring training and they are based here in Jupiter so I dont think he was bs'ing me. Anyway we tkae off together and just happen to meet up at a light going out of town into a very desolate beach side road so we take off and its on, I turn my ASC off , we are running about 120 w/him ahead of me by a length and a half or so and all of a sudden we hit a cloudburst type downpour so I carefully start to slow down but start to fishtail , next thing I feel is the ASC coming back on as the light goes off. So whats the deal, can this rearm itself in an emergency, I tend to think it can.

why the hell would you want to remove it? if you dont want it on just turn it off.. there is no reason to get rid of it just because you want more control.. all you gotta do is hit the silly little button.

besides... if my friend had left it on on his M3.. maybe, just maybe it wouldnt have skid into a curb..

Why have it on? I found it to be more dangerous on then off, there are sometimes when you need power to regain traction, the ASC would just fight you. I found it to hinder my car control more than it helped, though I wouldn’t recommend removing it to everyone.

If you think it's more dangerous ON, then why wouldn't you recommend removing it to everyone?? (not meant as an affront, more of a puzzle, as you always have very intelligent responses)

Personally, I specifically bought my '99 M BECause it came with ASC. I drive my car in New England winters and wanted that extra Winter help. That said, I still frequently turn it off in Winter when I want to have fun! Obviously it's off for racing but I usually don't bother with it most of the time... it doesn't interfere with my control.

erik - the ASC will NOT turn itself back on if you've turned it off, despite what your Tech may have told you. Turning the ignition off will always reset the ASC back to the default ON.

ritz - the ASC is ON when the dash light is OFF and vice versa... but I bet you got that now...

I've never heard of it coming back on before. Maybe that's why drifters don't use BMW's.

I turn mine off anytime i get in the car...90-95% of the time... but, for those rainy nights...or when i go up to the snow or whatever, it's REALLY good to have... im not deleting mine ever, no need...and the hp gain (if ANYTHING) is not worth the time or effort...or the bulb constantly staying on.... push the button, BAM....it's OFF...

No, drifters don't use BMWs because that just gets way too expensive. Besides I have seen plenty of people drift in a BMW before.

No gain what so ever. Just allows you to drive at the limits of the car with it off.

The cool thing about these systems is that it does things that you can't do, like individual wheel braking. The only time I could really think that this would endanger you is when you are trying to get out of the way of something. But even then it isn't as if the asc fights you that much. It is just trying to correct your over correction so to speak.

Max, that applies to my situation. IMO, i did think it was more of a danger on then off. Not everyone has the same level of driving skills, for some asc is a great tool to learn with and save their ass when the get going too hot. My friend probably wouldn't have totaled his car if he would have had ASC on. I just know my driving and my skills as a driver.

No offense taken, I could see how I contradicted myself.

First I disagree with the fact that there are no performance gains from ASC delete. I noticed a definate improvement in throttle response.

Also, it doesn't snow where I live, but even in the rain ASC never did anything to help me, if anything it f**ked me up on a few occations. It certainly did not help me once when I spun out in the rain.

For those with the annoying ASC light after ASC delete, just pull the cluster (about a 5 minute job) and remove the light.

I don't have it either, but I wish I did... it would be better if it stayed on or off, depending on what it was when you turn off the car...

if I did have it, I certainly wouldn't remove it - think resale...

Bad weather not an issue here in S.C. Definately have noticed better throttle response. People keep mentioning resale - it takes about 15 mins. to do the ASC delete or put it back in when you want to sell it.

I am pulling the asc off of my car as soon as the replacement hose arrives. I have been driving for over 18 years with out any such device. I turn it off 98% of the time(it is on when I forget to turn it off)

Anything that is in the intake track will cause a loss in power compared to it not being there.

I like to slide around sharp corners, I think it is fun. Yeah it uses the tires up but that is what they are for. I also really hate it when I am getting a good launch and it kills my drive out of a corner and makes me look like I cant drive, instead of leaving a corner with the back end stepped out a foot or so.

ASC is for those who can not drive or are to lazy to put forth the effort to drive.

How do people know that they want it if they have never had it? You would have to drive a lot of miles to have it engage when you are not expecting it to (that's the only true way to assess it's usefulness). Otherwise, if you drive intending it to engage then it is a faulty test of it's ability to "save" you. What I am saying is that you can't get into your buddy's car and test drive it to see if you think ASC is good. If you have never had it then don't be so sure that you would want it.

With 321bhp trying to drag your arse of the road backwards, it would certainly make for a more 'relaxing' drive when the conditions aren’t 100% !

At least if you’ve got it you have the option to turn it off when you want to get a bit silly …
