    Rear Speakers instead of Sub

Just wondering if anybody has had good results from putting larger speakers in the parcel shelf on an M3/4? I really don't want to give up an inch of trunk space to a Sub, and am looking for more base in my stereo, but clarity and imaging will be my main goal. I am planning to keep the stock head unit, and would like to add a 4 channell Hyfonics amp I have from a previous car to power better speakers.

    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

You could get package tray mounted subs like some of the e46s with the premimum package come with, and the e36's with the HK system. I am sure there are some half-decent subs that mount up under the rear package trays. Sure, it won't sound as powerful as a normal 12" sub.. but its better than nothing...

dark, what exactly are package tray mounted subs? im getting my m3 this sat, has the HK system also. would putting a 12" sub i already have in the trunk be too much? also, i have an amp/crossover, would those be necessary? i dont know too much about audio.

I think having infinite baffle(or free-air) woofers in the rear would be great...two 8"s is nice. The advantage of a IB or Free-air is that you only need a baffle to seperate the woofer's dorsal area and ventral area, it's like your trunk is the box.

If you have the old school HiFonics (series VII, VIII, generation X), that is the king of amps.

I think one 10" is the maximum I would put in a car like this, I have a single 10" woofer drinking 200 watts RMS; I'm thinking of bumping down to two 8" IB woofers. I don't know why, I used to bump to 4 12's, then 4 10's, then 3 10's, then 2 12's, 1 15", 1 10", blah blah....but that bass is just too heavy to enjoy this car for what it is made for. That is definitely more than enough bass for me. I love clarity in a performance car. But when i want to shake the picture frames in my house, it's in another car....=)

Check out the JL Stealth Box subs. They are great, but ofcourse don't offer low low bass... however they'll make the system sound absolutely incredible. I had them but I bought a 15" kicker, which basically overwelmed them enough for me to sell them.

I will look into this, thanks. I guess I was wondering if anyone had success with a larger full range speaker rather than a sub. I don't like the Boomy sound I hear from other cars at stoplights.

Sounds like the stealthbox's would be perfect for your situation.

I installed the Kicker RMB8's in my rear deck along with an adapter that is made specifically for E36 BMW's from a guy on Ebay. He has a website, but I can't find the link. They adapters sells for about $50, and the speakers were about $120. I am running these speakers with a 300 watt Fosgate amp in stereo, and I have to say that it sounds like I have a big box in my trunk and I am very pleased. This is basically the same set up as the Stealth Box because they also use Free-Air speakers with an adapter but for less money. Hope this helps.

You may want to bridge the amp and run it in mono to get some more sound of those rear speakers. The amp *should* be able to handle the load.

My father put a 12" JL IB Woofer in his 740iL and it sounds really nice. NOt too much bass, but since its a 12 it gets most of the deep bass. No box need, hence the IB, and a JL 250/1 runs it. It sounds great and takes up minimal trunk space. I love JL subs, and I will never stop buying them, but the JL IB Woofers are the only IB woofer i have heard so I dont know how they compare. I know they are reasonabley priced, and they sounds great, if your just looking for a lil more bass. check out

I have 6x9 JBL two-way speakers in the rear shelf. I purchased some very nice wooden custom mounts from this guy on the net to allow me to mount the 6x9s in the same space without having to drill/cut the stock locations. The bass is really surprising and the tweeter has a nice fill effect to the front sound stage. :rockband:

Do you have the HK system?

yeah, i havent got my m3 yet (this sat!) but how much of a diff is the HK to stock? will i want to put more into it? does the HK provide a decent amount of bass?

                          thanks

The HK has a decent ammount of bass, but not the really low tones, the subs just can't produce that. And its not like having a 12 or 15 kicker in the back. However, if you're not looking ot set off car alarm as you drive by, and really dont' want to overhaul all your speakers, the hk is a decent system, yes theres better, but IMO, the hk isn't that bad...

Not anymore .... I have an Alpine headunit, JBL components, JBL 6x9s, and a California Profile amp.
