What causes the purpley flash HID's have?

Hey guys, you know how most modern HID's in more expensive cars like the 5 series and E class have this purple flash thing happening when they hit bumps?

Like, it is very white dead on, but it flashes kind of purple. That's cool...what causes that? My HID's are just damn damn white. Which is good for brightness, but not as cool for looks. I still like them though, don't get me wrong.

I think its the way the OEM lense refracts the light from the bulb. What you are seeing is the shine behind you, then when they hit a bump. the light is then aimed above or below your view, causing it to look as if it has flashed. This could also make you see a blueish or purpley color.....my $0.02

Hmmm...so it is lense and not bulb then.

I think the X5 probably is the worst about that. It is THAT flast that people really hate about HID I think.

Well that would be my best explanation, but its a damn good idea, i mean look at the hemispherical lenses on most Bimmers now.

I have a friend with an X5 and whenever she is behind me i think she is flashing her brights telling me to pull over, man is that annoying

Yes I agree with Car, it is the Ellipsoid from the headlight housing itself that causes the change in colors at different angles or when you hit a bump...

The lens splits the light comming out like a prisim. At certain angles, you see diferent colors.

The fact people hate HIDs so much is because they are so damed bright when they hit you directy in eyes, or from road glare.

I get people flashing me all the time cause of my hids.. my solution?

Flash back and wave... or drive right at them.... ee:

              Hey Dark Sirius,

Does your conversion kit do the flashing purple thing?

On my old M3 I had ZKWs with 6k HIDs and i'd get flashed about 3 times a night, people I were behind would pull over i guess because it was too bright. Mine would do the purplish, blueish, yellow/white thing too..

If the lights are too bright for people, then they need to be aimed a bit further down. Especially if they are pulling over to get out from in front of you.

My $.02 and I am sure Umnitza can chime in here.

Oh I do understand that, I KNOW they were a little high, but people in my area are all stupid about that stuff...I did aim them down a bit then and the flashing/pulling over just about stopped.

I luv em and hate em depends on the situation. Kimmy was behind me the other night in the FX , now this vehicle does sit up higher so that is one reason, but the sheer brightness and the very deep purple/blue emiting from them drove me fuking nutz. It felt like my retinas were being fryed. I finally had to call her to tell her to get the hell away from me.

Negative. I don't have the projector lamp style lens, yet...

See the odd thing is that Mine DON'T do it despite the fact I have projectors. I have Bosch, but then again I've never driven in front of my car. All the other HID's I saw do it right on the road though. Like my parents car, when you hit a bump, you see the outline of purple on the road.

I have a tinge of yellow maybe...that's it. I'm going to have someone drive my car and I'll get in front of them.

You only see it when the HIDS are comming at you, when you're behind the whell of a car, the light should still appear to be white.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, its just the light being diffused in a bizzar fashion...
