That is an idea. My car life would be 94 525i, 95 eclipse gst, 96 bmw m3, 1990 Zr-1 and then 2000 Z06. That would be great hehe

16 grand for a clean ZR1 is probably a good buy when you look at what crazy money US muscle cars go for. There will always be a market for any ultra hi po Chevy product. Since I like pretty well all cars except truly shoddy products I'd say get what you like. A friend of mine recently bought a 1996 Firebird formula six speed at the same time I picked up my M3. He is convinced he has the ultimate car. He politely says mine in nice, but I know it doesn't do much for him. I even found a lot to like about my 74 valiant 225 3 spd.

          I'll sell you a 2003 z06...

I'm keeping the M3. When we first got the vette, we argued over who got to drive it... now, we argue over who has to drive it.

I am a Vette lover. I have always wanted a Vette since I was like 5 years old. I love my ///M3, I never dreamed I would own one, but I would trade even for a C5 any day.

I have been thinking about the same thing. green with tan.16,000 miles. super mint.

way more fun than the M. i can not believe that it will go to 150,000 with out the thing coming apart.(the car not that beautiful all aluminium 4 valve 4 cam V8) the rest of it are vette parts and not that expensive so I guesse if you stay on top of it it could last..

Totaled page shows a few that hydroplane in sudden storms and were totaled. 315's not so good in the rain

              less than 10,000 ever made

I think I might regret passing this thing up some day.

keep in mind you are on a BMW M3 forum... if you went to a vette forum you might get different responses in favor of the vette.. ultimately the decision on which car to drive is up to you... you have to see what qualities you want in a car and what your willing to part w/... kind of create a pro's and cons list for yourself based on what your looking for in a car...

w/ that said... I've wanted an M3 since high school and never looked back.... it offers a nice blend of speed, handling, class, elegance and luxury for me....

I would chose the BMW simply because it is a nice car for all situations it looks

professional for work, girls are impressed by the BMW, its decently fast, handles nicely, is civil for everyday driving, good for many purposes, decently reliable, is better built (come on' German BMW engineering vs an American chevy?)... I wouldn't trade my 99 BMW for a 90 chevy...

Do you own any other cars?

If this was to turn into a dedicated track car and you had a 5 series lying around, then I can see it I guess.

I wouldn't do it unless you have some serious $$. The ZR-1 is not a regular car (or a regular vette for that matter.) Do some research... my buddy works at a shop and laughs at how much guys spend to do basic maintainence on a ZR-1. Look into the cost of changing the spark plugs on it... (you need an engine hoist, I'm not joking). It is a rich man's toy. if you are going to do anything dumb with a vette, pick up a LT-4 GS vette, or a 99ish C-5. At least with the GS you would have a truly unique vette (with a bit cheaper maintainence than the ZR-1)

I bet you didn't expect me to win the following races after the first one

Ugh. If it was a C-5 Vette, I'd say go for, but a 1990?? I think you're asking for trouble.

Ok I guess my view is the only one w/any merit here since I OWNED A 1990 ZR-1. Yeah how bout that, so this comes right from the horses mouth so to say. I do not know your $$ situation but if you have lots of it , get it and turn it into a weekend car or 3 rd car, track monster etc.. As a daily driver no way. First due to its age the NVH levels will be very high and creaks and rattles are a real pet peave of mine, hence I drive german cars. The ZR1 is a weird albeit rare car. Its engine was very advanced for its time and cutting edge, but it was designed by Lotus, and built by Mercury Marine in Tampa, Fl , how GM threw this group together is beyond me. I had a lot of teething probs w/ mine and the parts were very expensive. The engine due to having three very different companies involved , w/ one being a marine company is hard to work on and the engine has to be pulled out for basic stuff, also not many shops can work on these. Sve yourself alot of head aches and lookfor an 01 Z06 or keep the M3, PM me if you want to discuss more details.

Were the rattles etc bearable when it was running right.

was it too far inbetween breif moments of running good to be wirth it?

                              As a 2nd or 3rd car.

the #s that can produce are so impressive. 185mph, 1/4 in the 12's It is hard not to desire such a beast. I used to have a T/A with a built engine. Hard to keep the liscence, fun. Talk about a POS, California stoner built, rattle trap. lots of tire frying fun though.

I have to echo much of what has been said already, however I doubt many of the posters have an idea of what a special car the ZR1 is. A friend of mine has a ZR1 and while it is quite a fast and unique car, it doesn't touch the practicality of the m3. If money is no object and you could keep the m3, I would suggest buying it as a weekend car, but I doubt you will be happy with it as an everyday driver. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
