    sticky trany help anyone

my trany is really sticky in my 96 m3, as in when i put it in gears you can feel its not smooth, almost as if rubbing against the synchro's. i re bled the system for airbubbles and still the same, when power shifting it has a tendancy to not want to go in gear in 2nd. also does anyone else's first gear whine in the rear end and the rest of the gears sound good?

My bosses 540s tranismission is like that, really grindy feeling. Someone suggested that the main ball below the shifter lever needed a good lubing....

Yes, my tranny whines in 1st gear as you get up to speed. So does my e21. I think thats just inherent of the trannys. You should hear the whining from my e21's diff... now, thats scary, sounds like a jet engine :P

Try replacing the fluid w/ Redline. BMW fluid is no where near lifetime as they say. I've heard others complain of a 'notchy' feeling & when they replaced the fluid they said it was better.

1st and 2nd don't always feel real smooth to me either. Sometimes even shifting out of 1st feels rough??? I've tried asking about it on Bimmerforums a couple of times but had 0 replys.

How was the shifting before the Red TMEs went on? About the same or noticeably different?

I didn't notice any difference after installing the TMEs. My shifting has always felt tight and I like it. It's just a couple of things that bug me. Can't always get it into 1st and sometimes it feels like it doesn't want to go out of 1st??? This will happen every time if I'm in 1st and let off the gas and then push in the clutch. The entire drivetrain(?) shakes when I do this. It's not pleasant if I accelerate hard and let off the gas a split second before pushing the clutch ouch. Is that normal???

I think I'll try the Redline tranny fluid.

Heard redline sometimes makes it the noise louder in some cases....

I had a problem down shiftin from 3rd to 2nd when the car was cold, made a grinding noise, and shifting from 2nd the 3rd was a little hard.

Changed to Mobil 1 syn fluid. Works very well. No more problems....

I have the UUC SSK Evo 3 and it seems tougher than the stock shifter mechanism - maybe it has to do with that. I have the black TMEs as well and it didn't really help as far as the tight feeling when shifting. I think that's just the SSK and one of the few problems with it. I have the Redline fluids as well and I don't think it either helped or hurt.

                Hope that helps.
