Mine has dim spots at 120 mph and 4,000 rpm too. I'd always assumed that in those spots the plastic film had unattached. It would be nice if it were fixed, but I'll probably not worry about it.

Thats almost looks like something is floating over it, on the clear plastic perhaps?

    Its cancer of the cluster!

I have the same problems. I thought that it was always like that because it's "small" little spots on the gauges that are dim.

dark sirius...i wasn't referring to the way YOU type, but in response to another thread that flipped into an argument about proper grammar as a courtesy for typing etiquette...needless to say, whatever. Thanks for your input on the silicon for the gauge rings...i'll have to not get sloppy w/ it on the gauges. My friend has the small round-ended chrome door locks. Ask park828 about his. For now, i'm gonna try not to get all pissy whenever I hit 60mph. Doesn't look like this is worth the trouble yet. Besides, there's still so much more to do. Bi-xenons....ahem....mr. park??? j/k Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Now a list of things typical of BMW that i've been plagued by, as many of you have or will be:

                Dim spot on gauge cluster

                Crooked/Sagging glovebox

                Crunchy/Squeeky Clutch Feel

                Weak-Worthless Fog light mounts

                Dead lighting on headlight-switch/driver-air-vent assembly

                Knocky/Worn Rear Trailing arm bushings

                Locking mechanisms with occasional emotions

                Brake Circuits with peaky emotions

                Oxy Sensors with peaky emotions

                Cold start issues

                5th gear issues

Stuck-open Thermostat (at least it wasn't stuck closed)

Lastly, something i'm sure few here have experienced:

Kinked sunroof drainage tube resulting in regular leaking of water into the passenger side floor area.

Still love my M3 tho, unconditionally. I think I put cleaner water my radiater than that of what I drink daily. Right Mr. park? j/k

it happens to me time to time, but somehow it fixes it self.. i took out my panel before, and all i can see is the 3 194 bulbs.. i have no explanation for it.. but it annoys the living **** out of me every time it happens. just like the damn brake light failure.. german electronics ****..

I had the exact same problem for awhile... then all of the sudden as quickly as it showed up, it fixed itself. I fully expect the problem to return at some point. If I remember correctly, my brother (BMW Tech) said that you would have to replace the whole gauge cluster. We took it out and looked at it while we were removing the ASC light bulb. Couldn't find a way to fix it, so I just left it alone, then it started working okay again. When the problem returns and I have the money, I'll replace the whole damn thing.

Ok, here is the answer as some of you have alluded to. It is the actual film backing coming apart from the backing that is causing this in small sections. The original glue used to connect the two pieces of film is slowly coming apart.

I was still covered by my CPO at the time and got a free cluster out of it. However, if you don't have your CPO, you will have to somehow completetly dismantle the cluster and reglue this with transparent glue to fix it. However, you may end up causing more harm than good. So it is up to you if you really want to attempt this fix. Otherwise, you have to buy a new cluster, and have the dealership install AND code it with your miles correctly.

This is too much effort. I'll live with my small dim spots. It doesn't effect me on a regular basis. Well...it does, but not dramatically.

cheers, astan....i may just deal with it until BMW stops charging what they charge at the shops!! Haven't paid to one yet, and don't plan to until i'm really screwed. I'll repost when i do dig into and give you all and update. Thanks a bunch everyone.

I'm just going to live with it. The needle still lights up and I'll know it anyway if I'm going 120. I've had enough of the other aforementioned issues to keep me busy. Thanks.

Ehem. I believe I suggested that before thank you. :smash:

Oh, getting the cluster apart takes about 30 seconds.
