    Car whistles.....any clue why?

About half of the time that I start my car it will have a whistling noise coming from what appears to be the engine. The louder the RPMs are the louder I hear it and when at idle it is barely noticable. It will only do this about half of the time. I could go to a store while it is doing it and then park, come back, and drive home and won't hear it. Any clue what it could be?

Mine does this also, have no freaking clue what it is. Very very strange, like nothing I have ever heard before. Doesn't sound like belts and doesn't sound like a bearing going out. Mine's a 95' btw

Mine is a 98. It almost sounds like air is coming in from somewhere it shouldn't.

When I used to have my Integra I put a CAI on it and it would whistle at a certain RPM b/c of the way the air flow was.

My car is completely stock under the hood so it couldn't be that.

More than likely, its the altenator. The ones they use on our cars tend to make a high-pitched whining noise. I put a new one in and it was worse than my old one.

Try turning on electrical componets and listen for a pitch change, the headlamps/foglamps is a good test.

Good idea, next time it does it I'll try that.

yeah, exactly. Mine did it again tonight. I tried adding load to the alternator by switching the headlights, ac, foglights ect, but did not notice the noise change??? Mine only does it when the car is "cold" (ie hasnt been run in a while) Very strange. At least I aint the only one, lol

you say it only does it when its cold??/ at first i thought it could be something to do with the airflow, but usually when your car's cold it takes in less air to make the mix richer, i think thats right anyway.....? best thing to do is have a listen under the bonnet next time it does it, and try to pin point where exactly its coming from...

could be the secondary air pump, it only runs when the engine is cold. It stays on for maybe 30sec or so.

Mine does it all the time. From start up and even while I have been driving for a while.

My car has a funny whistling noise too, but it only does it after it gets hot, and you can only notice it when you are idling. If you shut the car off, and start it again, it wont do it until you rev it up and let it idle again. It kinda sounds like air, and then it don't at the same time, maybe i'm just hearing things....

Mine whisted about 10k miles ago. At first, it only happened when I first turned it on. Then it would happen for the frist 5-10 minutes of driving. Once they turned sufficiently, the noise would vanish. My mechanic heard it and immediately diagnosed the problem. It was the pulleys or bearings (not sure what the name was) in which the engine belts run across. I replaced them, and noise was gone.
