making an already light car lighter

1) the E36 M3 is not a light car. it weighs 3,175lbs. that is a fatty. the Toyota MR-S comes in around 2,300 lbs. a brand new Miata will come in at ~2,500lbs. a Lotus Elise weighs 1,700lbs in european trim and around 1,900 in US Spec.
2) there are a lot of things you can do, but they all come at a cost. these are all free and will drop weight (i will skip the 2 things mentioned by sirius):
+ remove sound dampening material from under the carpet
+ remove spare tire, jack, etc.
+ remove a/c
+ remove stereo
+ cheap but not free: remove power steering, get manual steering rack. does anybody make one of these for the E36 M3? when you sell off the parts you remove you should end up paying little out of pocket.
+ remove sunroof moving parts/motor if you have it.
+ remove power seet motor/controls if you have it.
+ remove carpet, replace with rubber mat (cheap but not free).
+ remove windows, put a net in driver's side hole (free/cheap). replace windshield with lexan (not free, probalby not cheap either.)
+ remove airbags
a lot of the stuff i mention is pretty extreme and only for a track car obviously.
and every bit of weight you saved would be lost as soon as you put in a rollcage. :P
basically our car is a fatty, and you just have to accept it. lucky for us it's not as fat as most of the competition.

whats the problem with removing the spare? i have my out.. no biggie.. i understand if someone rams me that it would help brace the rear.. i know.. but if i get hit from behind there is also another 3 feet of back seat.. on top of that.. if someone hit me in the rear.. they would want me to be dead.. cause they might lose a head when i get outta my car, regardless of whether i can walk or not
as for weight savings.. its gonna cost.. CB or fiberglass hood and trunk.. also change the exhaust to a lightweight.. 17's which weigh in at 16.5 lbs or so.. im sure with alittle work u can get it under 3g's.. but its all about the benjamin's...

Your spare tire won't help brace the rear of your car (trunk) IT IS THE REAR BRACE OF YOUR CAR. I'll post pictures if you'd like more proof, I know first hand.
You can remove other stuff but the spare is the last thing to take out as it's the biggest safety thing.
Not 100% true. Many rear end accidents I have seen the trunk floor crushed right up to, and stoped by the spare.
