BTW - If I pull the fuse for my ASC, will that have any adverse effects on the car? Sometimes I feel like it still cuts in even when it's off; I'm thinking of pulling it for autocrosses just to be sure it's not interfering.

Doh! Im all over the place here but I am more concerned about highway driving in the snow. Especially exit ramps and switching lanes. If I cant get outta my driveway, fukit anyways. Would now be a good time to grab some OEM snowtires? Do prices go up in the winter months? Thanx

I don't know if prices go up but I do know that availability often becomes limited. I waited until the last minute last year and almost couldn't find the set I wanted.

You might want to try looking for a used set now; prices would almost definitely be lower than in fall/winter months.

If your stock tires are summer tires, don't even bother leaving the house. I had Michelin Pilot Sports that basically turned into plastic when the weather got cold; completely worthless.

Do the people who put on snow tires put them on all 4 or just the two rear wheels? I have seen people do both. My preference would be all 4 but just curious.

All 4. Don't put just 2 on; your handling will be terrible and the imbalance will negate any positive results from the snow tires.

The system can actually brake certain wheels and stuff if I'm not mistaken as well as cut power to the engine. It would NOT be an easy install and it's not worth it. Lots of guys are REMOVING their ASC in the first place to gain an extra few hp. Don't let traction control be a buying decision in the car process.

ASC cannot brake individual wheels. That is a much more advanced system called DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). It is available on the e46.

ASC is a much more primative system that just takes power away from wheels that are slipping.

I am a big fan of ASC in the snow with my Nokian tires.

Uhh. So lets say your front wheels are the ones slipping, doesn't taking away the power involve the brakes?

All ASC does is cut engine power.

wait wait...are you guys sure about the ASC thing. Time to google it.

                            Here we go:

                            http://users.cybercity.dk/~bbo2530/Private/traction.htm

IT does brake the rear wheels.

" In addition, ASC+T will also activate the brakes in the rear wheels if necessary, and to varying degrees if frictional coefficients on the road differ...The ASC+T system knows when stability and traction have to be increased thanks to the ABS sensors, which provide the computer with a steady stream of data on wheel slip for each side of the car, as well as on changing speeds in the drive wheels. If the predetermined limits are exceeded, the control unit will instantly activate the traction system."

You never noticed the funny sounds the car makes when you give it too much gas in snow? It definitely brakes something.
