Considering a change in my ride. What do you think about.....

Hey guys. I don't know if you remember when i started a thread mentioning that i was looking into purchasing the e46 M3. After looking and looking i realized that they are great cars but to expensive for me. I mean i can purchase one but i don't want so much of my money to go towards a car that isn't really that practical. With that said, i also realize i am getting older (26 years old) and i should start thinking a bit more practical. I'm looking into the BMW X5. I always liked trucks but never really saw myself in one until recently. The X5's are pretty quick (4.4 liter ones) and i think they are sharp looking trucks. If you get it with the right rims and color the truck looks sick IMO.

Considering getting rid of my M is a very difficult decision especially when it's in mint condition and never gave me a problem in the over 2 years of ownwership other than maintanence stuff (and i love my rare color). I'm not sure what to do. I mean i love the look and the power that's always there when you ask for it and that's a difficult thing for me to let go of. I guess what i'm asking is what do you guys think of the X5 and do you think i'm nuts for considering this. I know ultamitley (however you spell it) it's my decision and it's my situation that dictates what i should do, but different opinions are always good to hear.

Do you guys have any other more practical but powerful and affordable vehicles in mind for me?? Thanks in advance guys.

Aside from being tall, the X5 is a pretty fun ride, especially thoes V8's. If you're going to get a new one though, wait a few months until BMW fixes the DME problems with the engines.

Go 4.4, not 3.0 if you can

If i do go the X5 route i would definilty go for the 4.4 or even 4.6 if i can. If i can't get either of those than i won't get the X5 at all. I can't go for that much of a power loss. I mean they all look the same externally but the power does obviously matter for people like us.

Before i purchase a car i also look at performance possibilities and unfortunatly the X5 doesn't seem to have many unless you go DINAN and HOLY SH.T are those mods expensive. For about an extra 90 horepower it would cost close to $20,000. Those people at Dinan must be on drugs!!!

I mean it's not like i would probably ever even modify the X5 performance wise if i were to purchase it other than externally (looks wise) but it's always nice to know that i would have an affordable option just in case i get stupid. I have to think long and hard about this decision i'm giving myself. :hmm:

It all depends on what you need. You know yourself any X5 (with the exception of the new 4.8is) will not be anywhere near as fun as your ///M.

If you do it right though, like you said (car color, 24's, audio/video system etc.) then it can be a fun ride and the girls will still dig it. But after all that is said and done and you factor in the price of the car, you're looking at the same price as an '03 M3.

If you do decide to do this, you have to go with the 4.4 V8. The V6 is so slow, I can't even describe it.

Best way to describe the V6 in the X5 would be heavy.

I really like the X5's, here's a configuration of one which looks pretty sweet:

steep price tag tho, I'd probably take it for a lengthy test drive and think how I would feel about it a year from now...

I say since you want something more practical but still don't want to lose the ///M, go for this:

                damn I love that car

I can tell you from first hand experience that if you've ever driven an m3 you'll hate the feel of an x5. My girlfriend has a '04 X5 4.4 fully loaded and the car drives like it weighs 100 tons. It's definitely more luxurious but really lacks in peformance when compared to the m3.

If you're looking more practicle, you should check out some Audi S4 wagons. Those cars are so sick and of course they've got Quattro and an a$$-load of space...not to mention you can tune 'em awesome.

The X5's are good cars (2 in the family). It's one of the best, and probably sportiest of SUV's.

Check out the link in my sig. Pages 3 and 4 show a 4.4 and a 4.8.

If you plan to take it to the snow, forget about it. My friend's Previa did better in the white stuff than the X5. ;-)

Why not just keep your M3? I have a family, but have kept my M. My wife has an accord that we use for family stuff, but there's no way I'd sell my perfectly good car (that I've put a lot of time and money into) for a more expensive, heavy SUV that I know I wouldn't enjoy driving.

                              AAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I hate this.

Another reason why i would want to sell my M3 is because i know won't keep it until it's run down and with that in mind i want to sell it when it's still has good value. I mean the more new M3 models that come out the cheaper the resale value will be on our model.

I would LOVE to go the M5 way MBOBKAT but that would be way to much in insurance (i would assume).

I think the X5 is a really nice looking vehicle. And i honestly don't see to many around (at least in my neigborhood) I do see a whole bunch of lexus and mercedes trucks tho. There friggin everywhere. I don't want something that everyone has which is another reason why i love my M.

I have yet to test drive the X5 so who knows, maybe you guys are right, if i drive it i'll realize what i would be missing or maybe i'll realize i need a bit more luxury. I don't know. I wish my car was a piece of sh.t sometimes so it would make my decision much easier. Sometimes i wish i was one of those people who just wanted a car to get me from point A to point B. My life would be so much easier and i would have so much more money for other things. :help: :chair:
