    Smog Question.

Quick question on smog, i just went to do my smog that is required for change of ownership, missed the HC by like 4.. Figured i'd change the spark plugs and the oil since i'm due in about 300 miles and call it good. However i'm in California, our laws are over the top to say the least when it comes to emmissions. So i pulled the spark plugs and they are all perfectly clean, oil change i can still do, i was just wondering if there was any small tweaks anyone is aware of that can put me into the safe zone for a quick smog. I know i can probably get a new CAT and that would resolve the issue, but i was trying to avoid that for awhile longer..

Get the cats as hot as possible right before the test.

Run the car hard, 4-5k rpms for a bit, which will toast the cats, when they are that hot, they preform alot better.

..it could be just the testing station, they seem to be pretty inconsistent. Had a great running 86 toyota 4 wheel drive that didn't have a single problem. On one of it's smog years, took it to a big Chevron station and they said it didn't pass...but hey, they could work on it. I changed oil, plugs, filter..everything, AND added this stuff called 'Smog Pass' or whatever. It's a gas addative that guarantees you to pass (ok, don't see how they can guarantee it....but whatever) and took it back to a different place...passed and only had about TEN percent of the maximum....

I think you can do the oil, and you might try that stuff, available at most Kragens and such.....plus I'll second the 'getting it nice and hot' method'.

I just remembered that i had a additive put in my oil on the last change, i'm pretty sure that's what threw me over the top.. Not sure what it was, some clensing product because i was alittle low when i got back from picking it up and driving half way across the US.. I'm getting another oil change and i ran some fuel additive through it to help pass these hippy California smog regulations. Give it another run on friday, i really don't want to replace the CAT yet..

So i'm replacing the cat now.. Found that one of them was bad, but there is good news! It's only costing me $430 to replace both.. <They are factory.. >.. Sometimes i want to leave this little town, but then i realize it takes years to make connections like I have here..

Where did you get cats for that cost?

I have a feeling I'll have to replace mine soon.

Seeing how last year I passed by one point... hehe.

I'm gonna get mine installed in 3 days, i'll find out the availability. I know it's re-certified, meaning it's off a low milage wreck certified to be good. I just know i don't want to pay $1600 for the part!

Kinda off topic, but in order for me to pass my emissions last saturday, I had to swap out the JC chip and replace it with the factory. A PTA, but I passed. Dont know how or why that makes a difference :hmm:
