[QUOTE=Sirius]No, a well driven E46 will do 12.6 stock.[QUOTE]
*cough*
However I don't want to get into a time slip arguement... it's difficult when you need to factor in acceptable rt's, tail winds and laser levelling but, there's no record I've even seen of a Euro e46 M3 (i.e. faster than a US e46 M3) breaking 12.98.
I could be wrong, this I have to accept. But 12.6 stock for a US M3 is a dream.
Nevertheless, MatthewS, whoever he is, is a damn fine 1/4 driver, I've seen the videos and was impressed.

Thanks for the replies. Only 240 hp? So the difference in hp comes only from the difference in the VANOS? How does this big power diff. affect 0-60 and quarter times? thanks again.
people don't buy a E36 M3 for going fast in a line, it is the "ultimate DRIVING machine" which for me, means throwing some turns in there... don't look down on the 240 either; it is plenty fast.
something to consider at 15, insurance cost. I know that a buddy bought one here (in arizona) and under 25 on a coupe was over $400 a month... with a clean record. Also, as stated maint. costs, mods etc. make this not a very good car for someone in highschool.

ok. listen, im not trying to be an ass, i just want people to get past my age and give me serious, helpful advice, which many of you have. wonderbread, i honestly dont care if you believe me or not, but yes, i learned to drive a stick (somewhat at least) on a friends/neighbors p.o.s., then drove my dads 911 fairly frequently, but no i didnt go around cruising in the porsche everyday. i feel this has given much more experience than most other 15, 16, 17, year olds. As far as the insurance (which DOES matter) i was under the impression that the M3 was insured like it was just a 2dr 3 series BMW, because my quote was only ~2k a yr. is that not right? lastly, as far as straight line performance, that is deffinitely NOT the most important/deciding thing for me. i was just curious about the numbers, and the M3 handles so well that straight line performance is the M's "weakness". thank you, and i apologize if i have come across as a ****.

16-17 year olds have 1-2 years under their belt of driving experience. It doesn't matter if you drive an Enzo occationally if you're not out driving daily experienceing real life situations. Granted, the driving of the Porsche has hopefully tought you how to respect a fast car. BTW - M3's show up on insurance as M3's...it's a TON more than a regular 3-series. My insurance was 335 a month for me (19 year old male, 1 point). You'd have a lot of fun in an M3 and I'd say they're a safe car. They are pretty quick for the 240hp, but nothing over the top. You seem like a cool guy, so you'll have fun in the car, just don't let it go to your head whatever you do. I think you'd still have fun in a 328IS or something, put some body modifications on it, lower it, and just basically have fun having an awesome car as your first car.
BTW - Don't let what BMW owners say about Mustang's get to you...Mustang's are a ton of fun, have awesome car clubs, and have an aftermarket that is amazing. Not to mention a lot of torque and the amazing sound of a V8. I've noticed on the boards that people have bagged on Mustang's for being cheap...and that is TRUE, and that is why I love them so much! Modifications are cheap as hell for mustangs which makes them a great car to modify as the paychecks allow. My first 2 cars were Mustangs...and after my M3...I went right back!
Here's my new baby...
1996 Saleen S281
42k miles
Vortech Supercharged
got it for $16,750
Best part is it shows up as a regular 1996 Mustang GT

what's will all the player hating? I'm somewhat dissapointed that board members are making comments that really aren't helpful. I love this board and one of the reasons I'm on it daily is because 99.99% of the people here are polite. who cares if he's 15. so what if his parents pay for everything. richkid15,more power to you if you get an m at such an early age. Guarenteed you'll be a P.I.M.P. at school. Let the kid enjoy his youth because it only comes around once. trust me on this...once you get married and have kids it'll never be the same=) **Don't hate the player...Hate the game**

Well, if your parents are buying the car for you, I would recommend that you convince them to buy a later model e36. You can justify this by letting them know that only the later models had standard side-impact airbags (I know this is true for the m3/4, not sure about coupe), mismatched tires for safer handling characteristics, etc. (I'm sure you could dig up more awesome excuses!).
The M3 certainly does show up on your insurance as an M3... even with 4 doors the insurance company knows what is under the skin.
Another thing to note is that the manual M3's are much harder to find than the auto's and come at a $$ premium, but are well worth it. It may take you a very long time to find the car that you want with all the options that you want, but it will be worth it. I know it's very hard to be patient as a teenager, but I was able to hold out until the right car fell into my lap (wanted the e36 M3 for 4 years before I got one).
Finally, almost all teenagers **** at driving. This is nothing personal! I for one would not trust myself with the M's full capabilities. The danger arises when somebody, usually a teenager, overestimates their abilities (again, EVERYBODY is subject to this pupal stage stupidity, it's in our genes) and puts other people on the road in danger.
p.s. I still have to try that "M's get more ***** than stangs" deal... havent had the guts to bring the M down to school yet (want to avoid dings)
I'm with the stang guys though... my roomate has an excellent mustang that he keeps very clean. It sounds excellent as well.
