    What is faster...???

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering which car is faster....a Euro e36, or a US e46??? what are the comparisions in 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times??? and why is one faster then the other?

E36 Evo is faster. It is lighter, and its engine is alot peaker and willing to rev over the E46's USA engine. Stock for Stock that is.

Hands down US Spec E46. 0-60 in a US spec M3 is about 4.6-4.9 seconds with a descent driver. Top speed is 177 MPH. A 1999 E36 Euro spec (321hp) is 0-60 in 5.2-5.5 seconds with a 157mph (redline limited) top speed. Essentially they both have S52 engines with different names, but the E46's has lighter, stronger more durable components enhancing the rev's to 8000 and higher, making it a much more responsive peppier car . Also the E46 has an amazing 6 speed which really gives it the whp and the strong edge over the E36.

the US M3 can't do a 4.6 sec 0 to 60. that is really godly.

And they don't have the same S52 motor. Euro = S50 or S52. US E46 M3 = S54. E46 = fat pig, E36 = young piggy. Both S52 E36 and S54 E46 has 6 speeds. And the S54 motor in some ways isn't as durable as the Euro S52, it has problems like all the other motors.

Also E36 S52 is more open to mods as in it will produce more hp from maybe a intake or an exhuast, E46 S54's only give you 4hp to even 16hp from those mods.

Maybe on some facts but not on them all !

This was recorded in my standard e36 euro :

With no shift light and another cog to go …

ACS quote 282 kph (175mph) when delimited.

Disclaimer: I am an American living in America, I will probably never see a matchup of a true Euro E36 M3 v. American E46 M3, so my ultimate theory on which of the two is faster is just that: a theory, so please do not pounce on me if my thinking is somehow off.

That said, stock for stock, my money would be on the E46.

While I have never seen a Euro v. E46 M3, I have seen the matchup of similarly powered cars, mostly supercharged E36 M3s (making around 350 crank HP) against E46 M3s, and the result is usually the same - It is either so close that there is no clear winner, with the contest coming down to the driver, or the E46 pulls ahead due to gearing and its 8000 RPM redline. The 3.64 rear end in the E46 gives more of an acceleration advantage than most people realize, and the fact that the engine keeps building power until redline makes the E46 an extremely strong performer.

Now, remove the 3.23 from the Euro and add a 3.64, and IMHO the advantage tips to the E36 for its lighter weight, but it still lacks the 8000 RPM redline, necessitating a shift well before the E46, and resulting in lost ground.

                So who knows.

Are you retarded? They have the exact same engine block and components. Same displacement, same everything. The E46 is just improved with new computers and updated everything. Its the same engine, updated with a new name. Also if you cant pull a E46 to 60 in 4.6 seconds then you should not be driving one. Also if you cant run an E46 at 13.0 at 107 then you shouldnt be driving one. You need to stop reading codes and take apart some engines.

My sister owns a e46 M3 i own a E36 M3Evo. I have let my mate drive my E36 and me in the E46, (only twice) and both times the E36 and E46 were neck and neck and i think we are both good drivers.

Now the US E46 has 10bhp or 6 bhp less or whatever it iss, so im sure the E36 would take a slight lead.

Yes the E36 may only rev to 7600 rpm (v-max) and the E46 7900. But the difference in the way the engine pulss is astounding, THe E46 is alot smoother, but the E36's engine is alot peaker and willing to red line above 6000rpm.

Okay the E46 engine desin may be slightly superior to the E36's Evos engine, but lets not forget the E36 engine really is half a Mclaren F1 engine, with less regulations back in the day the E36 engine is superb.

The E46 M3 engine is a revalation, the E36 Evo engine is a revolution !

We are all winners for buying the M3. enough said

E46 is an S54 atleast here in Europe and the E36 3.2 is an S52.

                          Engine's are a bit different.

                              These are my opinions, but

the BMW M list of power/ performance goes something in this order

                              my E46 CSL > oldboys E39 M5 > my Sisters E46 M3 = my E36 Evo > my E30 M3 Sport Evo III

                              Handling in this order

                              my E30 M3 Sport Evo III > my E46 CSL >oldboys E39 = my E36 Evo > my sisters E46 M3
