Possible To Build A U.S. Motor To Euro?

i was wondering if i could build up my u.s motor to what the internals etc are like in a euro motor for under 5k.

i have a hookup where i can get a fully assembled euro for about 5k but not too fond of all the work involved in swapping, can i do it for less thatn that?

I honestly think it would cost more than buying a 3.0 euro motor. Definitely not worth it the effort in trying to get all the parts to fit (which I am pretty sure they wouldnt)

Hmm. IIRC isn't the entire head of the euro motor different than the US engine?

Yes...and then there is the dual vanos to deal with as well. I am not even sure as to whether or not the blocks are the same. :nixweiss:

          won't work.

From what I read, it seems you can get a fully built motor (euro) for under 5k and if so, buy it strip it and built it to be a great NA motor. And swaping the US to euro is almost the worst idea. because in the end it would cost you well over what a Euro motor + the install time.

Thats a crazy deal. Euro motors are decently hard to come by.... www.bimmerworld.com is probably the best place to find a Euro motor...$5700 (3.0)

Why would you strip down a euro motor..they are already pretty "high-strung" as it is. Tearing it down to raise compression probably isnt worth the effort.

I would strip it down and built it up, new crank, pistons, rods, P&P head, maybe a little bore (possibly not) agressive tuning, and some nice race cams! And all the normal bolt ons you can have fun with.

Oh, Absolutely. All of this could be done, I was just saying its really not worth the costs involved. Its not a matter of the parts on a Euro motor failing (as is a concern with boosting US motors)....so the upgrades would cost alot (especially a boring (not too much to bore anyhow...maybe 40 thousandths..but thats about it) as well as rods and pistons costing another $3500 or so...and then custom tuning for it all....

Basically it would be a crazy expensive build up, for little, if any increase. I would think a euro motor with cams, intake, and custom dyno tuned software would be pretty much unbeatable...

(no need for the pistons, rods, PNP, or bore..not too safe on walls that already arent very thick)

Richard, I guess i didn't fill you in that much. The shop i work at we just finaly got our Boss's Z3 with a Euro 3.2L running the best it ever has. And it can spin the tires 285's all the way up into 3rd..... Now after learning so much about the dual vanos and such We can rip off that head is under 30mins and put it all back together in less then an hour.

So I would think doing all of those mods would get us well over 400 to 500hp, and I trust the euro motor more then my US one. I donno why I just feel the euro one was built better.

The watt's built up euro motor is only making ~350 rwhp, ~400 on a engine dyno. A little bit more could be done, but thats pushing it for a motor with a life not in hours. PTG's euro 3.2's make the most power, but with a life in the 30-40 hour range. I doubt a street motor will make more than 350-380.

well again I am early in the tuning scene (only 17) and I love learning so much, but again I could see over 400 from a street Na motor. Just not a legal one.... And you know after building your na motor, you can always lower the compression and slap a turbo on there.

                          Hang on a Second.

If you are building an NA motor for high hp....you do it much differently than a motor built for forced induction. If you are going to make an NA motor make 400hp (rwhp) there is no way that same motor runs well with a turbo on it. Lowering the compression with a headgasket is kinda like a bandaid for a bigger problem. You would be better putting in compression lowering pistons...which would defeat the purpose of building the motor high NA hp in the first place.

Thats cool that you are hanging around the shop..but engine building is kinda involved and takes experience, not just thinking throwing parts will work together. (I am not claiming to have lots of experience..but I have played a little with motors.)

It could be leagal....look at Defactom6 on bimmerforums...full engine build and he is going to shoot for over 400rwhp all motor after break-in!

hey Drifter, where did your boss get his euro 3.2 or the parts to build it?
