Ok.. oil is actually somehting i know alot about so here it goes, take it as you will: 15 50 mobil one is still available. i ran valvoline 15 50 sythetic this time.. its cheaper. the advatages of sythetic are less viscosity break down, better ability to isolate contaminates and more consistent viscosity through a wider range of temps.. therefore the BS pf rough starts with thicker synthetic oil is simply that, BS. if you run syn, you can switch back to conventional though a switch either way is not recommended. this is because seals become conditoned to certain oil types and my not agree with the change.. leaks etc. this can be true of switching between a detergent and non detergent oil.

now.. calling conventional oil mineral is a miss nomer. actually its is largely mineral oil but has detergents, animal fats and other BS in there.

basically thicker oil is better for your motor, more protection less likely to leak or burn, but does strain the oil pump and due to increased friction gas mileage can decrease slightly.. you'll never know. with sythetic in an M you should run 15 40-50 or thicker. there is a reason BMW speced that oil. 10 30, 5 30 etc offer less protection, and again sythetic is engineered against hard starts when cold.

in response to my buddy salty.. AMS is great stuff, similar to royal purple it gets almost no viscosity break down and offers a ton of protection.. but if you run it, you should stick with it.

I just picked up two cases (6 per case) of Mobil 1 Synthetic 10-30 @ Cosco for $4.15 a quart.

badgtho - but I heard that the lighter the oil the better because in the mornings the oil will move through the system faster and thus faster lubricating all the components. No?

I just called the place where I bought my car and they said when they serviced it they changed the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30. My car has been running great with that, think I should be good running that? I went out and looked at some oils and it was either 10w-30 or 15w-50.

BMW dealers sell 5W30 synth for my car in the Canadian market at least. You will be fine with 10W30. BTW, there is no mention of 50 weight oil of any type being the prefered weight in my owners manual, just a reference to "Special Oils" approved by your dealer being the best choice.

I heard something once from a BMW mechanic about how 15W 50 (anything 15W for that matter) over time isnt great for engines because of something inside of the oil that is used to give it it's huge tempature range. I dont know if this is true but it made me feel sexy staying with my 20W50 synthetic.

10-40W Redline. And OEM BMW Oil Filter with a copper washer for the drain bolt. Aluminium washer and small and large rubber ring for the oil filter rod and canster.

And really any oil is the best oil, it just despends on who you talk to.

not trying to sound stupid, but what are the difference between the viscosities of oil?

The first number is the cold weight (which translates into ability to flow), and the second number is the weight when the oil is hot. The higher the number the thicker the oil. Theoretically higher number oils have more film strength.

So would i want a higher number or are there cons to high numbers or a point when it isnt as beneficial?

I think I"m going to run 15w-50, everyone that seems to have a reputable reputation around here runs something like that. I might switch back to 10w-30 in the winter though.
