c33. I think it changed to c43 in mid98 production, but can't confirm via MRegistry since site has been down for like two weeks. Need to ping Alex and ask what's up.

My 96' had a C43. I think they changed in 96' when they went to OBD2.

Well in my 95, the headunit does not look like the c33.

C33: stock 96-on head unit. (about $100 used)

C43: deletes weather band, adds PTY to display program sound type, RDS for radio station ID, and increases voltage output for slightly louder sound.

CD43: adds in-dash CD player. Supports random playback. No mp3 capability without an addition kit from places like EAS. about $300 used

Everyone wants CD43's because they can display Ipod song names and artist with certain connection kits as well as radio station information.

Some people on eBay sell CD43's with M logos on them to cover up a land rover logo - since they are at the same headunits.

                    I've been wondering about this...

Can anyone confirm the c43/cd43 having better sound quality for the preamp output? I spoke to Bavarian Sound Werks about this and they informed me that there is a misconception about the difference in headunits and the only difference in sound quality is that the c43/cd43 has improved circuitry(higher voltage) for the FM tuner and makes no difference on the preamp side for the CD changer/Ipod connection.

If anyone that has upgraded from c33 to c43/cd43 can you confirm that CD/Ipod sound quality improved when changing the headunit was the only variable?

                    Any input appreciated!

                    Also-

On the CD43s with the M sticker can you peel that off and somehow remove the Land Rover logo underneath?

                    Thanks

It seems an almost universal opinion that the sound is much better with the cd43. I don't recall reading anywhere of someone regretting this swap.

Among OEM units, it seems the cd43 is the one to have.

BTW, just leave the "M" sticker on. Many have reported it's difficult to take off, and then you're left with a Rover (? Audi?) stamp underneath.

Can anyone with this upgrade tell me what kind of tool they used to remove the screws on both sides of the radio. There is some specific tool BavAuto sells, I don't have that.

FWIW, here's what my seller said about the Land Rover rumor:

Many guys in the US have benefited from this upgrade from me as described in your forum. But do me a favour and tell these guys these units do not come from a LAND ROVER, all Land Rover CD43's have a green display which won't match the BMW illumination see my other listing for pictures of a Land Rover one.

I think my fav benefit of the cd43 is the fact that it has the text capability. You can tell what song you are on because the title scrolls across with the Dice unit. When you have a 120gb iPOD and you have 1000s of songs it is good to know what album and what song you are on.

Of course some will argue that you can glance at the iPOD, but that is not very safe. :raspberry:

Since the topic of head units is going. Question, when I bought my M3 it had some sort of stock BMW radio in it, all I remember about it was the faceplate flipped down when you pushed a button. when it flipped down there was a place to put a cd, and I cant find anything about it. Anyone have ANY idea what it was?
