You're saying personal driving style overrides the widely-accepted laws of physics? I'm done with this thread.

We are talking about perceived loss not the numbers, I made that perfectly clear. On top of that you quoted some one who said with supporting mods there was no loss and he has a dyno to back it up.

I just spend a couple minutes reading on the internet about this physics you speak of and this is what I came up with.

At worst that area is not maximized by the given intake velocity at that time and harmonics + scavenging effect (nothing to do with tune btw but you can do some calculations using the open end formula realizing that the 1st 2nd and 3rd harmonics correspond to N=1,3,5 ect) but it certainly possible to have more power everywhere (except maybe near idle) from M50 + complimentary mods. What is a more interesting discussion is if the S52 manifold will always produce more torque at a certain RPM, even with significant NA mods. I think eventually the M50 will be able to keep up and then outshine everywhere else. (Unless you had cams specifically tuned for low end (why?) and a helmholtz or something similar operating in the same range.)

Relatively speaking there will be a low/mid torque loss by changing plenum dynamics (in the way we are talking about) assuming constantly proportional volumetric efficiency. However, that whole quantity (torque) is also related to RPM, so adjusting the window --> beginning and start will affect your answer (consider the integral of a function of power vs RPM on the on the X axis from 0-3k vs 0-12k with everything else constant).

not anytime soon... my 200lb weight loss program is in effect

Cal - does your friend still have the used cams for sale?

you somehow managed to say a lot about physics without actually saying anything. i suggest you keep reading, not on the internet this time.

No. I suggest you read some of my other posts about this subject. I made it perfectly clear what the M50 does in much more basic, straight forward terms. I'm not the expert of the M50 and I don't even have one on my current car, but I see a lot incorrect info posted about it. If someone wants to twist the words of what I said then I guess I will have be more technical. Class act too by coping out of the discussion. I'm not sure what you find lacking in my explanation. It's overly technical but only to be all encompassing in case he wanted to do more nit picking or twist more words. ITT the basic explanation is already well explained here and it was not something that needed to be regurgitated in the same exact fashion.

As for the reading I also may have taken a few classes and work for an engineering company.

Does eric have instructions for his m50 manifold install?

From what I hear, there are many pages in his instruction manual.

The Bimmerwolrd kit has like 4 pics and one page of instructions. In fact I had a bracket left over that it never mentioned and I couldn't find a place to put it either.

I sometimes think I should have gotten Erics kit. The BW kit has a nice silicone hose for everything, but there are no brackets to remount the oil separator and the IAC (I think thats waht it is) back to the manifold. And it wasn't the previously mentioned bracket. Also BW did not indicate that a small portion of plastic had to be removed from the M50 for the fuel rail to fit back into place. I suppose you could bend the lines from the rail, but I'm not certain how well the bend before they break.

yes, a very detailed one too.

Thanks for the input guys. One more question, is there some sort of gasket that has to be changed?

Havent heard anything ever being mentioned about any gasket...my friend is making me doubt myself :shifty:

This is the ONLY adapter kit I would get if I went the M50 route.

I'm sure Eric is a good guy but I don't trust those plastic home depot couplings to withstand the prolonged heat that comes with living in the engine bay. Eventually those types of kits can create vacuum leaks (imo) which is probably why many people have issues with their swaps, even upon startup. The BW kit is good because it reduces the amount of potential leaks but for an extra few bucks the Turner/Eurosport setup is worth the piece of mind.

It is certainly a nice kit. If money is no object, I would consider it. I made my own in 2005 for about $25 plus $75 for a manifold and have not had any trouble with it despite years in a high heat environment and subject to much greater stress than the average M50 intake install. That big metal thing hanging under the intake would make fiddling around with my supercharged and w/a intercooled 99M3 even more of a pain in the rear, though. I would lean towards the Bimmerworld kit were I paying the big bucks.

3 years and 30K miles on mine later, ZERO issues..

I have never had any issues with the 9 or 10 M50 manifold's I've completed using Eric's kit either :clueless:

Care to explain how my friends' m3 still runs fine after an m50 manifold was drunkenly installed with the m50manifold.com kit?
