Sorry, but in my opinion stock calipers are not "pretty damn good" I think they're absolutely junk. To be completely honest, something is terribly wrong with my current calipers, even after 2 rebuilds so I'm going to scrap them. For some reason the pads are sticking to the rotors even after releasing the brake pedal. Yes I've lubed and cleaned the guide pins, yes I rebuilt the calipers correctly, yes the master cylinder has been replaced, yes the servo works properly, and yes all brake lines have been checked for kinks.
This is causing the pads to CONSTANTLY drag the rotors causing a ton of heat, accelerated tread wear, pad deposits, and a shimmy that is driving me effing bonkers. I can turn the rotors and the issue is gone for about 2 weeks, then its back. I have no other ideas here regarding the fault besides the calipers themselves, so I'm chucking them.
I would rather spend 250$ on lightly used 4 pots than 400 on brand new e36 OEM M3 calipers.
That's actually interesting point, did you try to compare contact area size of OEM brake pad and pad from e38 caliper? 4 pistons are fine, but what else you'll gain?
I will no longer be dealing with a sliding caliper design.
