For the 96-99 cars, I think BMW used press fit or splined bolts with nuts, not studs with nuts. They seem to work well for about 10 years, depending on climate, but one or more of the 6 often break on removal thereafter. I see no problem using bolts with nuts. They hold the rest of my exhaust together. I don't like the headless bolts (not studs) that BMW uses for the exhaust manifolds.

1) take car to exhaust shop and have them oxy-acetylene torch those mothers out. DRILLING THEM DOESNT WORK
2) get some M10x1.5 SS 35mm bolts, with flanges, and flanged nuts as well. Use those. Ace hardware has tons, use anti seize when reinstalling, and you are good to go for $25-$30 in quality hardware
this is what I have done, works great, and I'm always removing my exhaust all the time, and its perfecto
Ok, so I got all my hardware at ACE, 26 bucks! Now is it ok to bolt the exhaust back on with the five remaining studs in order to get it to an exhaust shop? Is an exhaust shop going to use the nuts and bolts I bought, cause It kinda seems like something they wouldn't do (nothing to gouge, I mean, profit from)
In addition to that, I have the entire suspension off right now, and will most definitely need an alignment before I drive too far.
Should I do the alignment with five of six exhaust studs, or get the studs torched out with a bad alignment?

did you think purchasing a BMW would equal cheap maintenance? :lolhit:
break my wallet....
I wont disagree with you though, price is funny. This is an exhaust bolt?
Meh, I got it because I wanted a car that would be fun and rewarding to work on, and I like a challenge. E36 M3\4 was always one of my dream cars, and honestly, with an E36, cost of maintenance wasn't too much of a worry. I figure I could probably dump about 4k a year into it, and have everything I could realistically want in a car in about 5 years. I'm going back to Wyotech for all things automotive... eventually.

If the picture on the Pelican website is right, that's only a grade 4 bolt and not heat treated or anything. Which means it's absolutely nothing special. Go to the hardware store and grab an 8.8 hardened steel bolt and boom, even better than OEM.
edit: Just read you already bought hardware at ACE. I'm going to leave the post for anyone else who reads this thread.
