Still using the wood grain lux knob as well. Probably just swap to an illuminated black leather knob since mine has started popping off as well. I think I can steal power from the ash tray bulb under the center console.

Alcantara, although it looks nice, is probably one of the worst choices for steering wheel and shift knob covering material. It's only a matter of time until it's disintegrating and you're exiting the car with little bits of it on your palms.
As much as people are going to ***** and moan with a bunch of uneducated nonsense... driving gloves make alcantara a worthy upgrade. Get over the false image of yourself wearing driving gloves and you can enjoy these types of materials for decades :thumbsup2:

Coby wheel weighted Zhp knob wrapped in alcantara. (Did some of their sites photography including this one).

I've done alcantara for the last 3 bmws of mine all have held up well for several years with regular care.
Also not eating greasy fries and shit and then touching them helps prolong their life.

In E30s and E36s THIS (http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E36-M3-S52_3.2l/Interior/Shifter/Shift_Knob/ES2091473/?salesrep=JRiggsbee&utm_source=m3forum&utm_medium= forum&utm_content=JRiggsbee&utm_campaign=postreply ) is my personal go to knob. It's heavy, short but not too short, and looks very "period correct" in their interiors.

ROFL at all the negative zhp knob comments.

i have one and am not using it because i do not like the height. imakes the car feel like your driving an eclipse. especially with the stock armrest down in my driving position as im small, my elbow hits the armrest in wierd ways and i have to reach downward and shift with my fingertips, in a way that would be comfortable with a older bmw knob is not with the modern ergonomic shiftier shape. i do not like the zhp knob at all,
alcantara is a amazing material, but is disgusting once worn by ungloved hands for a few years, or in my case putting 30-40k miles on my m3 a year itll be gross in a month.
thanks for the input so far

Okay I'll grant with the stock armrest that would annoy me. I have the low plastic tray deal and with the z3 lever and zhp knob its a great setup. Could be closer to the wheel for autocross but I spend more time on the street so I prefer it.

I installed my new ZHP illumination shift knob from leatherz.com and it's incredible. I'm not sure why anyone would consider buying anything else. It's weighted just right, looks like it belongs in the E36 M3, is the perfect size and height, and you get to keep the illumination feature. $150 shipped and arrived in 6 days. Worth every penny.
If everything you touch while driving a car (seat, steering wheel, pedals, shift knob) feels like a million bucks, the car feels like a million bucks. If you skimp out on buying vital pieces that are used while driving, you will either never realize why you dislike your car or you'll regret buying whatever half-ass product you poorly invested in.

I am actually looking at a heavy weighted one made in Japan and in the decision making process has compared it to the non-illuminated weighted ZHP. I like the heavy weighted one from Japan because the short shifter I got reduces the throw 60%; however, it's a round chrome with the M3 logo model that doesn't match the interior unless I paint or plasti dip it.
I'm still in the decision making process.

Agreed that if you want the benefits of a weight shifter to do a DSSR or DIY WSR mod a la Rod Stygar.
My first choice was the condorspeed shift knob because increased length is what you want when you have a shorter throw system and minus the looks of the jaffster.
A little knob engulfed by the leather shift boot looks teh gey imo. With that said my second m3 came with the ZHP knob already mounted. It is shorter than stock but causes no discomfort despite being shorter than the armrest. I wasn't fond of the metal stripe, but again, not really noticeable unless youre OCD is hitting the ceiling and Im pretty anal retentive. Its not the fancy leatherZ with illumination one either, but I don't foresee myself replacing it anytime soon. Would be $ better spent on much higher priority maintenance issues etc.
Keep in mind there were originally two lengths of the Jaffster; one med and one for her pleasure. FYI - If you like the billy club look consider the sneed speed lever.

That's sort-of it. The ZHP knob is worth an armrest delete - indeed the armrest gets in my way even with the stock tall knob.
In fact why on earth do people need/want an ugly armrest? Put two hands on the wheel or use your lap to "rest" if you're really that tired/lazy.
I don't really like an SSK in the e36 and the ZHP is a good, stock looking compromise. As for the aluminium, match it with ACS (rep) alu pedals, handbrake grip and a BMW Motorsport glovebox badge and you're gold.
6-Speed, non-illuminated (because wtf is that for?) ZHP all the way.
